A/N: Okay, it has been ages. Hi I had this stupid idea in my head and it wouldn't let me go until I wrote it...in one go. Btw, it's not beta-ed, if there is a kind enough soul to do it I would be really thankful!
Kyungsoo straightened up his shirt. It was already ironed to perfection, but he was way too nervous to notice that. He took one last deep breath and went through the huge entrance of Kims&Co’s building. As a recent graduate with a business degree from Seoul University, Kyungsoo did expect to spot a job position quite fast but he never imagined that his CV will lead him to one of the biggest conglomerates in South Korea - Kims&Co Corporation -where half of Korea’s trade takes place. And the most unbelievable part was that the position they offered him was far too good for his experience- a personal assistant to director Kim’s son who is just entering the company after his MBA abroad. At the training period they told Kyungsoo that he was chosen because they were looking for someone of the same age as Mr. Kim’s son who could easily communicate with him and in the same time assist him well.
Kyungsoo bit his lower lip, still waiting for the elevator to arrive. For the past two weeks he has been doing intensive training to prepare himself for Kim Jongin’s arrival in the company. He’s been through memorizing clients, contracts and strategies, which should supposedly help him have adequate knowledge to assist his boss when dealing with business. Already in the elevator, Kyungsoo fixed his tie for the last time. This was his chance to prove himself. All the years, spent studying so hard, the sleepless nights and lack of social life have paid off. The elevator peeped as a signal of his arrival on the top floor of the company - the place where all executives in the company had their offices. With a small smile, Kyungsoo stepped out of the elevator and was welcomed to the beaming world where reals business was taken care of.
“Oh, Secretary Do, you are here just on time!” Byun Baekhyun, one of the people in charge of his train spotted him as he entered the hall.
“Good morning, Baekhyun-ssi.” Kyungsoo bowed politely.
“Oh how I wished it was a good one…” the other man sighed as he gestured Kyungsoo to follow him. “The office has been in a panic since yesterday because of Mr. Kim’s arrival. God is a witness to all the stress we are going to face from now on. And I don’t even imagine how you are going to Manage, Secretary Do, I will pray for you.” Baekhyun looked at Kyungsoo as they were nearing the end of the hall where Kim Jongin’s office was situated.
Kyungsoo had a straight face on as he gulped, he knew what he was facing, yet his motivation helped him relax. The people who have actually met Kim Jongin before described him a merciless and pedantic person who took business way too serious. He moved to America when he was still in high school and finished it two years earlier. By the time he graduated he was helping his father with taking care of basic matter considering their business in the USA. While doing his bachelor he was already expanding their company and during his Master he was balancing between studying and being the Chief Executive for their American branch. Unlike of most chaebol’s nowadays who were deemed as undeservingly taking the positions of their parents, Kim Jongin has proved the totally opposite. This is why he has gained Kyungsoo’s respect so quickly to the point Kyungsoo did not pay attention to Mr. Kim’s actual character. His was warned more than once to keep a note to the way he speaks with his boss and that he might witness Kim Jongin’s severe mood swings.
Baekhyun left him at his desk and left in a hurry, mumbling how the atmosphere just didn’t feel right and he was worried about his own job. This didn’t make Kyungsoo calm down. Although he was confident of his education profile, suddenly he was scared if Mr. Kim will approve of him. With no time to really think of it, he noticed a worried Baekhyun signaling him for afar that he was here. His boos was here and Kyungsoo felt like hiding under the desk. But he had no other choice but to stand up and head back to the elevator. The small screen above the elevator door signaled that there were 5 more floors. All the employees were freaking out. Women were checking their makeup and hairdos. Men were trying to fix their ties and shirts. And there was Kyungsoo staring at the elevator door with his big eyes as if it was about to explode. He wasn’t thought how to manage a pedantic boss back in university.
The door opened and Director Kim stepped out first. At the age of 55 he still looked very charismatic with his lean figure, his hair already gray, probably from all the stress surrounding his work. Everyone bowed slightly as Baekhyun greeted him formally. Few seconds after that his son entered as well. Kyungsoo has seen a few photos of him in internet and from magazines but they did him no justice. The Kim Jongin in person was a breathtaking view. Tall, with broad shoulders, dark skin and refined features that would make him stand out from a crowd of hundreds of people. His full lips were formed in some sort of a polite smirk as he greeted with “I’m Kim Jongin, please take care of me from now on!” Kyungsoo was too starstrucked but he went with the flow and bowed as a response.
Mentally, he slapped his cheeks ‘Come to your sense, Kyungsooyah!’
“Mr. Kim this will be your personal assistant.” Baekhyun announced him way too fast for hi likings.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Kim, my name is Do Kyungsoo, please take care of me.” Kyngsoo bowed 90 degrees.
“I would ask for the same, Secretary Do.” Jongin chuckled.
“Good, son, I will let you take a look around, I will be in my office if you need me.’ Director Kim said as he patted his son’s shoulder.
“Let me show your office, Mr. Kim.” Kyungsoo gestured the direction. After a few seconds of an awkward silence they were inside the spacious and bright office, overlooking Seoul.
“I just want to say it is a big honor for me to be your personal assistant, Mr. Kim, I will be at your service 24/-“
“Do Kyungsoo, 25 years old, freshly graduated from the prestigious Seoul University with highest GPA in his year, fluent in English and Chinese. Praised for his academic record…I guess you will do for a while.” Jongin was staring intensely at Kyungsoo while resting on the desk.
“E-excuse me?”
“You should have heard about my reputation until now, Secretary Do.” Jongin said as he moved next to the window, taking in the magnificent view of Seoul. “I am a very strict person and I don’t tolerate failures. Hopefully, you will be able to cope up at least for a few weeks, I don’t want to start with such a bad record here. As for now, bring me a double shot Americano, it’s going to be a long day.”
Registering the command to leave, Kyungsoo barely made it out of the office without stumbling. This was far worse from what he expected. In a hurry, he took the elevator to the first floor to buy the coffee from the coffee shop in the lobby. There was nowhere such an asshole can ruin his feature just because he’s too full of himself. ‘I will show him I am more than that!’ Kyungsoo said to himself just before the thought of spitting inside his coffee crossed his mind.
When he was in front of the office again, he took another deep breath. Kyungsoo had no plans on giving up this position. The whole day passed in a blink of an eye. After what seems like hundreds of introduction through the departments and revising new marketing concepts, the working day for Kyungsoo ended at 11pm. Just when he was about to leave the office he saw Jongin leaning on one of the desks in the hall.
“I must admit that you have more energy than expected, Secretary Do.” The taller men said with a small grin on his face.
“You should know this basic rule for business, Mr.Kim.” Kyungsoo said as he was entering the elevator. “Never judge a book by its cover.” The last he saw was the shocked face of his boss as the doors of the elevator.
The whole week passed as a whole torture for Kyungsoo. As if on purpose, Kim Jongin has tried to turn his stay in the office in e living hell. But this wasn’t going to stop Kyungsoo, even if it meant few extra hours in work every day. All his tasks were in before the deadline, with extra details and precision.
It was 10PM on Friday night when Kyungsoo’s phone ringed a familiar tone. It was his beloved hyung from university - Luhan.
”Yah! Do Kyungsoo, where have you been the whole week!? You’re not even picking my calls! Hyung is worried about you! I want to know how your work is going”
“Sorry, Luhan-hyung, I have been so busy, the whole week, it’s a warzone over he-“
“We are at the chicken place on Myeongdong station. Get your ass over here before we drink all the beer in the restaurant!”
“Arraseoyo..” Kyungsoo chuckled. He guessed this was all he needed after such a long and exhausting week. He gathered all his stuff and headed outside. He still had the whole weekend to finish his work.
…
“So you’re saying this Kim Jongin guy has been tormenting you the whole week and you haven’t had more than 5 hours of sleep per day for the past 5 days?” Luhan was almost shouting when summing up all Kyungsoo has said in front of his friends. Chanyeol was just staring at him with compassion and Sehun was leaning against Luhan during the whole time, even quieter than usual.
“Haha, Kim Jongin, this bastard, he hasn’t changed at all, hmm?” finally Sehun said.
“What!? You know him?” Kyungsoo almost chocked on the beer he was drinking at that moment.
“Knowing him is a bit too much.” Sehun shrugged. His three friends were now staring at him waiting to explain. “We went to the same middle school before he went to America. He was such an arrogant and bratty guy back then. He wasn’t speaking with anyone and had no friends, as if we were all unworthy for being his friends. He pushed away everyone who tried to befriend him.”
This night Kyungsoo couldn’t fall asleep for a while. He thought of Jongin’s behavior. Even now he was still not accepting anyone near him. He didn’t try to make and acquaintances at work, always staying in his office and leaving later than anyone. He was still polite with everyone but behind his small smile when greeting everyone, there was a cold person, who was trying to isolate himself from the world. Kyungsoo found it sad. That such a promising businessman had chosen this way for his personal life. With his looks and background he could have whoever he wanted a lover or friends, but he had decided to shut himself up.
…
It has been a month since Kyungsoo has been working for Kim Jongin. A month full of working over hours , physical exhaustion and heartbeats. Kim Jongin was more than just a good businessman, he was genius, turning every deal into a goldmine and bringing a great success for the company in a month. As his assistant, Kyungsoo was supposed to match his boss’ attitude. He learned a lot from Kim Jongin and he had to admit there were other things he learned as well. For example, the way Kim Jongin takes in the smell of his americano every morning and sighs as a sign of contentment with what seemed a real small smile on his face. The way his eyebrows crease and his lips pout every time during a video conference when there is a lag in the stream. His addiction to watermelon flavored bubble gums and how he blows bubbles when he thinks no one is around.
He noticed as well that Jongin wasn’t that reserved towards him anymore after the second month. Apparently even back in America there was no other assistant that lasted so long working with him. Kyungsoo was happy to hear those words from Baekhyun. He made good friends with him in these two months. For Kyungsoo all this lack of sleep and social life in the past months was totally worth it when Jongin first complimented him about an idea for an advertisement adjustment to one of their campaigns. For a second there Kyungsoo thought he actually saw a spark of live in the other man’s eyes. These deep eyes he thought he can get lost into.
...
It was at one of those business dinners that Kyungsoo finally realized his true feelings. Jongin and he had to attend it to seal a deal, which in Jongin’s words meant ‘kissing some asses’. There was a lot of alcohol as on every business dinner in Korea. As etiquette Jongin and Kyungsoo had to pour drinks as the youngest people there and drink every time someone offered them a drink. This ended as quite a disaster in Kyungsoo’s eyes. Jongin who apparently wasn’t used to soju because of the years spend in America got drunk quite fast. But luckily he was one of those people who would just smile and stare in the air for the whole night and thankfully didn’t cause any accidents
.
“Aish, seriously, can’t you even stay straight up for a few seconds while I open the door?” Kyungsoo hissed trying the support the weight of the older guy while trying to open the door of the taxi in front of the restaurant. Jongin hiccupped as an answer.
When he managed to tug his boss in the taxi, Kyungsoo sat next to him and gave the address of Jongin’s apartment in Cheongdamdong
.
“You know what, Secretary Do?” Jongin said suddenly. “You were right about the covers of books. I shouldn’t judge them. You have been a great help for me. Thank you…” after this he dozed off on Kyungsoo’s shoulder.
On Monday morning Jongin was back to his usual cold self. But Kyungsoo wasn’t the same. He finally acknowledged what he has tried to ignore for a while. Kim Jongin had found his way into his heart, asking for no permission.
…
“Aigoo, Kyungsooyah, you have it pretty bad, my dongsaeng…” Luhan shook his head.
Kyungsoo sighed; he wasn’t the type who wouldn’t share his feeling with anyone. That’s why invited Luhan for a lunch break, one of the few real lunch breaks he has had since entering the company. He already knew his unrequited feelings will probably never reach Jongin and it really hurt. There was no way he could confess to his boss aka the ice prince of the century.
“But if he said those things to you, at least it means he doesn’t hate you?” Luhan gave him a supporting smile.
“Yeah, that’s because I literally slave myself to be the perfect secretary... I just don’t know what to do, hyung. I think if I stay in the office, it will only make me like him more…”
“Kyungsooyah,” there was a strange glint in Luhan’s eyes. ”Why don’t you try to seduce him?”
“What!?!” Kyungsoo literally spat some of the food in his mouth back in the plate. “Don’t be ridiculous, hyung, I don’t even know if he likes men or women.”
“Well, if you ask me, he has been way too emotionally shut to even choose a preference, that’s why it is worth to try…”
“I don’t think it’s a good idea, hyung…”
“Oh, trust me, it’s the best idea my genius brain has come up with in a while.” Luhan said as he snatched his phone to make a few calls.
…
Luhan’s idea wasn’t just classified as bad, it was outrageous. And when Sehun, Chanyeol and unexpectedly Baekhyun popped up in the picture, Kyungsoo really regretted ever telling his hyung. Apparently, the four men had teamed up to transform Kyungsoo’s appearance as a first step. Kyungsoo found himself in a hair salon with his four friends debating over his haircut. Kyungsoo has had the same color since entering university - dark brown with occasional highlights, he thought it was fancy enough for himself. But when he heard burgundy Luhan swore he thought Kyungsoo’s eyes would pop out of his sockets any moment. After a long fight, Kyungsoo lost and left the hair salon with a completely new look. His fairly long hair partially shaved, burgundy color and styled on one side. Kyungsoo had to admit it didn’t look that bad. But he couldn’t imagine going to work looking like this.
“Oh, please, Kyungsooyah…” Baekhyun used a gesture to point at himself from head to toes. “You’re nowhere near me” And his was right. Baekhyun’s hair was currently blond, even his eyebrows matched the color off his hair. He stood out at the office so much.
After that they want to buy new suits for Kyungsoo, Luhan saying his beloved dongsaeng could afford it now with his paycheck. They bought way too fitted models in Kyungsoo’s opinion. When Baekhyun suggested that Kyungsoo should try on some eyeliner, Kyungsoo lock himself up in the restaurant’s toilet refusing to go out until his friends promise there will be no more changes.
…
Jongin’s reaction was better than expected. When he saw Kyungsoo’s new image on Monday morning he was speechless for a moment, his lips parted slightly in surprise.
“Are you reaching the rebellious stage of your teenage years a bit late, Secretary Do?” finally he gained composure and asked.
Kyungsoo couldn’t hide his blush and embarrassment. “I-I just need a change, I guess.” He managed to blur out before exiting his boss’ office. He was too busy cursing himself to notice the playful smile on Jongin’s face.
…
Next on Luhan’s list was trying to achieve skinship. In his opinion, skinship was going to make Jongin open up to Kyungsoo. Kyungsoo was pretty sure it will be a fail, but he felt like he had no other choice in the saying when Luhan hyung was involved.
And here was Kyungsoo, in Jongin’s office, handing his daily report to his boss. Instead of handing it from the opposite part of the desk, Kyungsoo crossed over and stood next to Jongin’s chair and handed him the document. When Jongin started reading it, Kyungsoo sighed involuntary and decided it’s now or never. He leaned closer to Jongin, his head a few inches from Jongin’s face, placing his hand gently on the other man’s shoulder and pointing at one of the heading in the report.
“We should stress on this point, Mr. Kim, their chairman has showed interest in it before.” Kyungsoo said and his body retreated to his original posture. He was too excited to notice his hand was still on Jongin’s shoulder. Fighting a blush, he decided to star in the empty space until he heard Jongin calling his name.
“Ahem, Secretary Do?”
“Ah, yes?” Kyungsoo was startled and looked down at Jongin’s face. His boss stared at him for a second than averted his eyes to Kyungsoo’s hand on his shoulder and then again looked at Kyungsoo.
It took exactly five seconds for Kyungsoo to mutter an apology, bow and leave the office in an utter embarrassment. Once again he didn’t notice Jongin’s amused expression.
…
As much as Kyungsoo wanted to end this, Luhan insisted even more on continuing. His current idea was the most absurd until now - making Jongin jealous.
“Why would he feel jealous when he doesn’t even like me, hyung?” the smaller boy was completely confused.
“Believe me, Kyungsooyah, man always realize what they feel when they are about to lose something.”
“Hyung, you’re talking as if we’re not man as well…” Kyungsoo has never been so confused in his life.
…
Hyunsik and Kyungsoo have known each other since forever and they hang out occasionally. It was no surprise for Hyunsik when Kyungsoo called to ask him to hang out. Luhan’s plan was for Hyunsik to come pick up Kyungsoo exactly at 5PM when the working day ends which meant Jongin would be still at his office. Kyungsoo was nervous during the whole day, trying to finish as much work as possible. With Baekhyun’s help Hyungsik would be able to come up to his office and it was almost 5 now. As if on cue, Jongin’s door opened, Jongin asking Kyungsoo if the files he requested were ready for him. At the same moment the secretary saw Hyungsik approaching in the hall.
“One moment, Mr. Kim.” Kyugsoo said pretending to search for the files when he knew exactly where they were placed, only trying to lose some time for Hyunsik to arrive. ‘Don’t screw up, Do Kyungsoo!’ he warned himself.
“Kyungsooyah! He heard his friend’s voice and jerked up, smiling as he spotted him a few meters away.
“Yah, Im Hyunsik!” he said as he stood from his chair, grabbing the right file in the same time and handing it to Jongin.
“Here you go, Mr. Kim.” With just a second spared at Jongin, he faced Hyunsik again and walked towards him. Only centimeters away, both opened their arms and hugged. Nothing more than a friendly embrace for both of them, but Kyungsoo hoped it looked differently in a certain person’s eyes.
“How have you been, Hyunsikah?” Kyungsoo asked.
“Fine, I guess, we have a lot to catch up, hmm?”
“Just let me grab my bag and let’s head out!” the shorter boy said and turned around. Surprisingly, Jongin was still at the same position he left him at, staring intensely at the two men in front of him. When he saw Kyungsoo looking at him, Jongin turned on his heels and went inside his office without saying a word. The secretary couldn’t believe what he saw. Was this really jealousy in his eyes? No way. No fucking way. Smiling like a fool, Kyungsoo took his bag and went to his friend.
“Come on, Hyunsikah, I am buying us a dinner tonight!”
…
Kyungsoo guessed it was too good to be true on the next day when Jongin acted absolutely the same way. If he was really pissed he should have showed it with his attitude towards his assistant. But there was no difference. Kyungsoo was mentally prepared for more work as a way to be punished. There were no signs of jealousy or whatsoever. He came to the conclusion that probably his boss was just offended of his behavior.
After this even Luhan seemed to give up, saying Jongin was a blind fool for not being able to appreciate his precious dongsaeng. Kyungsoo tried to burry himself in work, avoiding Jongin as much as their professional relationship of boss and personal assistant could allow. Everything seemed to be back in tact until this night…
Kyungsoo just got home from another ridiculously long day was lying on the couch, too exhausted to reach his bedroom when his phone ringed. The tone surprised him, it was Jongin calling. He picked up, a bit worried because of the time he was calling.
“Yes?” he asked hesitantly.
“Yah, Do Kyungsoo, come here!” just buy the way Jongin addressed him, Kyungsoo already knew he was drunk. For Jongin it was always ‘Secretary Do’.
“Come where. Mr. Kim?” Kyungsoo was really worried now. He knew his boss’ tolerance of alcohol too well.
“In front of my house, I forgot the code and I am locked out.”
“I can just tell you the code, it’s 93-“
“NO! Someone can overhear us! Come here immediately, I am cold!”
‘He...he hang up?!? Aish, unbelievable!’ Kyungsoo grabbed his bag and left the house in hurry.
…
“Finally! Took you some time to arrive!” Jongin was sitting on the ground in front of the door, he looked annoyed and drunk - not a very good combination.
“Let’s get you inside, Mr. Kim.” Kyungsoo said helping him up and supporting hi while entering the pin for the house.
The shorter man has been here a few times, running errands but he didn’t know where the bedroom was. He managed to find it pretty quickly and helped his boss on the bed when he tied to stand up Jongin grabbed his hand and jerked him on top of himself.
“Tell me, Do Kyungsoo, why are you so confusing?”
“Excuse me?” Kyungsoo was out of breath. Mainly because he could feel the other man’s breath, his mouth only a few inches away
“You. Confuse. Me.” Jongin said between breaths.
Kyungsoo was too intoxicated by the whole situation. Suddenly he felt his lips on Jongin’s. Both of them slightly awkward, suddenly a piece after piece, all their clothes were gone and the whole night went into a blissful blur.
…
Kyungsoo heard a loud bang and jerked awake. It took him a few moments to realize he wasn’t in his bed and to remember what happened last night. Suddenly he heard footsteps, indicating Jongin was on his way to the bedroom. He shut his eyes, pretending he’s still asleep. Was the sudden loud noise a way to wake him up so he can leave faster? Was Jongin really going to do this to him? Afraid of the harsh truth, Kyungsoo decided it the best to just lie down until God takes him away. He could now feel Jongin’s presence in the room. He squeezed his eyes tight, waiting for the inevitable. He felt the mattress sink in and there was a silence for a minute.
“Yah, I know you’re not sleeping! Get up I have to tell you some urgent things!”
Kyungsoo geared up the courage and opened one of his eyes. How could Jongin look so effortlessly gorgeous this early in the morning? The shorter guy had no strength in his body, his bottom hurt, he could barely whisper.
“Do I really want to know what you’re going to say?”
“Oh, yes, I am sure you do! Because I tried making pancakes for the first time in my life and I failed miserably and almost set the kitchen on fire and we both need some food in our stomachs before I bring you back to bed and make proper love to you.” He smiled and leaned over to kiss him.
And this kiss told Kyungsoo more than any words could.
