Summary: When Jared Padalecki headed off to college he thought he was going to get an education and eventually mate with a nice girl his Mama would be proud to call daughter. He never expected to lock eyes with Jensen Ackles and have his whole world turned upside down.
After spending a week with his family, mourning the passing of his grandparents, the last thing Jensen expected was to come home to his roommate in the throes of a mating fever. Taking the high road, he moved out. Unable to find an apartment at such short notice he found himself moving back into the dorms and rooming with a freshman named Jared.
Master Post |
Art Post The Word of Us is actually the fourth story that I started writing for this years bigbang. The first, a sci-fi fic, didn't work out for me within the time I had, the second, an SPN fic didn't interest me all that much, and the third I actually finished all the dialogue for, that involved mid-twenties Jensen and Jared playing WoW. This plot, however, I fought for a while and it was really a story that I started writing to get it out of my head. Instead of just writing till I could move on to my other projects, I ended up starting and finishing the draft in May, thanks to encouragement from
Peppervl,
Morganoconner, and
anyothergirl415. Also, my betas
candygramme, who stepped in only 9 days before my post date to check my grammar, comma usage, and tense, and
peachey_schoorl who gave me suggestions on how to improve different parts of my story and other suggestions on how to make things work better. Thanks you guys!
Also, I want to thank
Spn_2008 who made some really, really awesome art and let me see different versions over the past couple months! Go comment on her post and tell her how awesome she is! (I really, really love the dividers!).
My goal with this was to try and create a world similar to the one we live in, but drastically different as well. I wanted to show how the idea of mating would affect society and how things would be if the main religion of the world--or at least the world as my characters know it--didn't believe same-sex couples existed. I did purposefully leave much of the history of the religion open. How it came about that the religion claims same-sex pairs don't exist isn't as important to my story as how those pairs work within the society they are born into and actually help maintain the status quo.
I couldn't explain every single thing within my fic without bogging it down, but I did include some hover text with additional information (see text or below). If you're curious about it, assuming it isn't something that'll be delved into during the sequel, which will include more information on the Church and government's relationship (which is very close), feel free to ask!
This story was about the status quo, J2 learning that not everything is as it seems or they'd been taught, and showing Jared as he grew up and learned to stand up for himself to his Mama. I've already been told by my alpha and beta readers that I need to write a sequel, which'll happen when I finish my other projects.
Thank you all again for reading! I hope you enjoyed it! If you have any comments or critiques just pm me or leave a comment. Anon commenting is enabled, but screened as I don't want readers to have to scroll past vulgarity. (Yes I know where the anon comm is and can go there if I want, I don't need it linked to me.)
Once again thanks to
Peppervl for looking it over again to make sure there weren't any formatting or glaring errors before I posted!
Also, many thanks to
Wendy and
thehighwaywoman for organizing the challenge!

Part One:
* King Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was rumored to have been mated to her first husband, Arthur, who died five months after meeting. This information is unconfirmed; however, as the Church issued proclamations of “royal mating” in order to maintain bloodlines. True mates tended to become members of the household, often taking up the guise of a servant or member of the court in order to keep their true status and relationship a secret. This was believed to be a great deterrent against assassination attempts.
* The greatest recorded age difference between mated pairs is fifty-three years. Hugh Hefner and Holly Madison mated in 1999 and their subsequent relationship could have ended Hefner’s controversial career. Madison, however, did little to discourage her mate’s business ventures, even those that straddle the line between illegal and legal. Three months after mating, Hefner devoted an entire issue of his magazine to Madison. It sold more copies than any other magazine that year.
* Although mating occurs most often at the moment of eye contact, there are many other factors that come into play in order for a mating to occur, including hormones and pheromones. As such, those with sensory disabilities are able to successfully mate. Hellen Keller was rendered blind at deaf by illness at 19 months successfully mated with Winston Corbally at the age of twenty seven. While sense disabilities are often not an issue, some mental disabilities seem to affect one’s ability to mate, especially those often generalized under “Mental Retardation”.
* Greek letter organizations, or fraternities and sororities, are groups that organize social events on college campuses. Initiates are generally unmated although mated pairs can and do join them. They are a community of individuals who generally have similar interests academically, socially, or in extracurricular activities. Unmated members of a sorority or fraternity generally live at their house along with a few senior mated pairs. The mate of a member automatically gains membership to the brother or sister house.
* The longest recorded time, past the first year of mated life, recorded that a mate lived after the death of their partner was three weeks, two days, five hours. The male died in a car accident and the female, seven months pregnant, lived just long enough to give birth to their daughter. As in most similar cases, the daughter was left to the most capable family member to take care of.
* (o-tah-ku): A fan on an extremely obsessive level. In Japan, a derogatory term. Used anywhere outside of Japan, otaku automatically refers to an anime obsession. www.animeacademy.com/fut.php
Part Two:
* The mating fever occurs in two main steps. The first step begins from the moment a pair meets and lasts till they achieve their first orgasm together. There is a small window of time, no more than a couple of hours, before the second phase begins. The second lasts anywhere from three days to a week and abates only for short periods of ‘recovery’ time between orgasms.
Part Three:
* Batman is one of the few widely accepted pieces of entertainment wherein the hero lacks a mate. It is actually commended for its depiction of the loss of Bruce Wayne’s parents due to his father’s murder at a young age. Some radical theorists have claimed, however, that the comic hints at a same-sex partnership between Batman and Robin, the boy wonder.
* Some research suggests that as much as two percent of the population engage in pre-mated sexual relationships. This varies from region to region and based on level of familial and person involvement with the Church.
* Most official social gatherings have rooms set up for newly mated couples to be herded into. This means that the party will only stall for a moment or two before people can return to the room. Public locations, bars and clubs, can’t usually afford additional rooms to be built in. In the 1990s all public places were forced to lift restrictions that banned unmated individuals entrance in order to avoid loss of business for the night.
Part Four:
* Mated pairs tend to be very affectionate out in public. Pairs involved an alliance must be comfortable engaging in some amount of sexual content in order to be successful, especially those who plan to fake the fever in public.
Part Five:
* There are two ways to receive an education higher than an undergraduate degree. The first is through a Master’s program at a university. The second, often favored option is to apprentice to an individual already established in your field of study. Graduating from the apprentice program does require an individual to pass certification tests, written and practical.
