Anything Nancy Pearl recommends (link is more general, she has a lot of YA lists).
Michael Ende, Neverending Story and Momo
Astrid Lindgren, esp. Pippi and Ronja
And found this, on Somali refugees in Maine
YA Arthuriana
Russell Hoban
John Green
Brian Jacques, Redwall and Mossflower (my brothers were obsessed with these, and so was femme's)
Mrs. Frisby and the Secrets of NIMH
Bridge to Terebitha
Summer of My German Soldier
Diary of Anne Frank
And I have a bizarre love for Ellen Raskin, especially The Westing Game
Oh, oh, and E.L. Konigsburg, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and many more (Father's Arcane Daughter)
femmequixotic suggests Veronica Roth's Divergent series, Lloyd Alexander, and the Stoneheart series by Charlie Fletcher - HIGHLY recommended for boys, but also girls who don't like overly girly books.
And here are the ALA Lists of Most Frequently Challenged Books
