8.7. "I'm not gonna die in a hospital where the nurses aren't even hot."
Supernatural

For some reason, Dave had Bohemian Rhapsody running through his head as he lay on CT platform. It was so bright in here, so stark, and without fail, wearing a hospital gown always had a way of making people feel that extra bit vulnerable. He really could have done without the tragic rock soundtrack. It wasn’t doing anything for his emotions, but it was just stuck in his mind with monotonous repetition. As per orders, he was laying as still as he could, looking up at the top of the large tube. It was a good thing he wasn’t claustrophobic, because there wasn’t a lot else in the world that could give you a trapped feeling quite like getting a CT scan could. He’d had enough of them over the time, one would think it would get easier.

It just never did.

He swallowed heavily and bit down on his lip, trying to remain indifferent and not actually react to the situation, but it was impossible. A couple of tears escaped and trickled slowly down the sides of his face. Even the morning hadn’t started so well for him. He woke up not feeling well, with that all-too familiar fluey feeling setting in. He was achy where Bella had examined him the day before, he felt hot from yet another fever, and his stomach was upset. It was probably just nerves and anxiety, but whatever it was, food felt like a foreign substance, so it was a good thing he was supposed to be fasting for the examinations.

“Dave? Are you doing okay?” Bella’s soft voice came over the speakers in the machine.

“Fan-fucking-tastic. Best day of my life,” Dave replied shakily, still telling himself to stay as still as he could. He cleared his throat softly, but nothing was dislodging that lump that had taken residence there. “Can we just get this over with please? I can’t promise I’m not gonna throw up at any minute.” He could hear the steady clicking of the machine taking the images and it was doing nothing for his already frayed nerves.

“Sorry, sweetheart. Bad choice of words.”

Dave smirked faintly and then let his eyes fall closed. “Just because you’re knocked up, doc, doesn’t mean you get to ask stupid questions.” He paused and then figured it wouldn’t hurt to try his luck. “Have you got the report from the ultrasound yet?” It was highly unlikely she would issue any sort of diagnosis through a glass wall while he was lying in a machine worth thousands of dollars, but at least it gave him a topic of conversation.

“The radiographer assures me it will be at my office by the time we’re done here.”

“Typical,” Dave replied with a small snort. Radiology were notorious for delays with results. Granted it was a large hospital, but it always seemed to be more emphasised when you were a doctor waiting on results. It was worse than waiting for a pot to boil. “Has Rick gone home yet? Is C okay?”

“Not yet. He wants to wait until I can get down and see him before he goes. I think he’s worried that once I discharge him, I’m going to forget about him. Considering I spend every morning with my head in the toilet bowl and my jeans don’t do up anymore, I’m pretty sure I’m not in danger of forgetting him. C is trying to smuggle himself out in Rick’s bag, I think. He even got dressed. Well, tried to. His put on scrubs pants and his shirt was on inside out and back to front, but the attempt was admirable.”

With a slight huff of amusement, Dave wet his lips. “Sounds like C. I was gonna say I didn’t think he was able to do much without help yet. Bella, if I ask you something, will you be completely honest with me?” There was a hesitation as he expected. He couldn’t blame her for it, either.

“Of course, love.”

It seemed the hesitation was catching, because when Dave went to get the words to verbally leave his lips, he balked, choking up a little. “It’s not looking good, is it?” The silence did feel metaphorically deafening. Even the machine had stopped clicking. “Bella?”

“No, Dave. It’s not. That’s us done. Get dressed, sweetie. We’ll talk in my office.”

Bella (halfway2heaven) used with permission and much, much love!
