"What were the Volturi doing in your vision?"

Alice sighed. "It wasn't clear. I've only seen flashes. Aro's face, and Jane. I've seen Volterra. But nothing substantial, nothing to give me any clues." Alice sighed again, this time in frustration.

"Its alright. There doesn't appear to be any immediate threat, does there?"

Alice shook her head.

"Okay, so we don't concern ourselves with this yet. When there is something to see, you will see it, Alice. I'm sure you will."

She nodded wearily, curling up into Jasper's body. "Are you staying with me tonight?"

"Yes." Jasper held Alice tightly, resting his cheek on the top of her head.

"I love you Jasper."

"I love you too."

Carlisle and Esme didn't return from their hunt until morning.

When they did, Jasper was sitting on the porch, waiting.

As soon as Carlisle was close, Jasper stood and walked toward him. "How are you feeling, Carlisle?"

The doctor kissed his wife tenderly on the lips, and told her to go inside. As soon as she was through the door, Carlisle stepped closer to his son, placing a soothing hand on the side of Jasper's neck. "I'm fine. I feel wonderful, in fact. But I've worried about you all night, Jasper. Tell me how you are."

"Yes, Edward said you had been worried. He knows what happened, of course. He read it in Esme's mind. His reaction was... minimal."

"Well then, I am glad to hear he did not cause a dispute. But that's not what I asked you. Tell me how you are feeling, Jasper. How did you react last night, after you fed?"

Jasper cringed at the word 'fed', and how casually Carlisle threw it at him.

"I felt... incredible. Strong and invincible. I felt so good."

"And your craving? Did it subside?"

"Almost immediately, I barely had time to notice it fading."

Carlisle's smile was bright, it was happy. And it hurt Jasper to feel the joy that radiated from the doctor's body. He was almost glowing.

"This is magnificent news, Jasper! Wonderful."

"Wonderful?"

"Yes, of course. Such a simple solution to combat your lust for humans - you drink from me."

"Carlisle... I know I asked you about this, briefly. But we don't know if I can do that to you. We don't know how often I can feed... from you."

"No we don't. But I am fine now, aren't I? You are satisfied and strong."

"I don't want to kill you." Jasper whispered.

Carlisle laughed. "You couldn't kill me. You are able to hurt me, Jasper, weaken me. But there is not a fibre in my being that believes you could ever kill me."

Jasper stared at the ground. "Thank you Carlisle."

The doctor moved even closer, arms encircling the younger vampire. "Anytime you need me, Jasper. Be sure to let me know."

Jasper responded with a slight nod, placing his hands on Carlisle's strong, hard hips. "Anytime." He mumbled into the doctor's shoulder.

That night, the Cullen’s sat together in front of the large flat screen television. Carlisle sat with an arm around Esme, whispering sweet nothings into her ear every now and then.

Edward sat on a separate couch, alone. His face void of emotion, hands firmly gripping his knees as he pretended to listen to the news.

Rosalie snuggled close to Emmett. The large vampire ran his big hands through her luscious blonde hair.

Little Alice sat with Jasper, perched on his lap, still as a statue. She held his hand against her chest - close to where her frozen heart would be.

None of the vampires attempted to make conversation. They all enjoyed the simple act of watching TV as a family, accepting that there was no need to fill the silence with idle chatter.

Jasper was the only one unable to relax. He sat with his back straight and stiff, head tilted slightly to the side, eyes focused on Carlisle. Or, to be more specific, his eyes were focused on the doctor’s neck - and the pale pink scar that seemed to glisten in the light from the television. It was a similar scar to the ones that adorned Jasper’s own body, only the one on Carlisle’s neck was yet to fade to white.

The scar both bothered and seduced Jasper. He was disgusted with the knowledge that his teeth were a perfect match for the raised pink flesh on his father’s neck. But still, his body, the hunger inside him, was seduced by the memory of how beautiful Carlisle tasted. How sweet and completely satisfying his blood had been on Jasper’s tongue.

Jasper forced down the growl in his throat, closing his eyes against the desire burning through him.

He could feel Edward watching him, digging through his mind.

Jasper pushed him out, blocking his thoughts as he began to recite an old poem in his head.

Edward’s anger spiked. Jasper opened his eyes to look over at the mind reader, sending a wave of his own anger toward his brother.

Edward stood suddenly and stalked from the room.

Jasper made to go after him, but a powerful hand on his shoulder stopped him. Jasper turned to find Carlisle standing behind him, a calm expression on his handsome face.

“Let me go after him.” The doctor’s voice was gentle, reassuring. Jasper nodded, taking his place again on the couch, pulling Alice back onto his lap.

Jasper and Esme both watched Carlisle leave. Before he turned his attention to the screen in front of him, Jasper glanced over at his mother. Esme smiled at him, kind and loving. She trusted Carlisle to make Edward understand.

Jasper would have to do the same.
