Character name: Shiba Kaien
Fandom: Bleach
Timeline: Before the death of his wife.
Age: Unknown. Appears to be in his late teens or early twenties but probably has a couple centuries under his belt.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Basic Physical Ability
Kaien has trained his body for centuries in the art of combat. Because of this, his speed, strength and reflexes are all far above that of an average human being.
Reiatsu // Also known as Spiritual Pressure
Reiatsu is a product of the reiryoku (spiritual energy) that an individual shinigami possesses. When unsuppressed, it can have devastating effects on a shinigami's opponent if strong enough.
(IE: Ichimaru Gin used his reiatsu to pin down a handful of people, completely immobilizing them.)
Notably, Kaien's reiatsu is considered above the average for even those of the nobility. It was said that by the time he entered the academy, his reiatsu was already comparable to that of a vice-captain's.
Shunpo // Also known as Flash Stepping
Shunpo is the art of moving faster than the naked eye can follow. The better you are at it, the more distance you can cover with each step. In essence, it basically allows Kaien to cover great distances in the span of a few seconds.
Kido // Also known as Demon Arts
Kido is the practice of turning reiatsu, a shinigami's spiritual energy, into spells. These spells can be used for a variety of purposes including offensive combat, defensive maneuvers and healing.
Zanpakuto // Also known as a Soul Slayer
A zanpakuto is not only a shinigami's main weapon, but also a part of his soul. Each one is capable of cutting through spiritual beings and dealing damage, as well as housing a sentient spirit.
Kaien's in particular is named Nejibana (roughly translated as Spiral Flower) and when released, changes from an ordinary looking katana into a trident. Made unique by the blue horsehair tassel at the top and a screw design near the bottom, Nejibana is capable of manipulating water, going so far as to disperse it in great quantities during battle with every strike and blow made by either end.
How would they use their abilities?: Kaien has absolutely no interest in fighting for pleasure or gain. The only thing he'll fight for is to protect life and pride and ultimately, his heart.
Appearance: Topping out at an even 6'0", Kaien is tall, well built and broad shouldered. With gray-green eyes and spiky black hair, his appearance is one of the tamer ones of the Gotei 13 with no substantial features that call out for attention, save for a tattoo of the Shiba clan on his left arm. At a first glance he might seem intimidating or even wild but it quickly becomes evident that he's quick to smile and incredibly open, giving him an amiable disposition.
Background/Personality: Kaien is the oldest son of the Shiba Clan, which was once one of the five great noble houses of
Soul Society. In his childhood, he spent a great deal of his time in the
Rukongai, befriending its inhabitants and passing on the lessons taught to him by the family retainers, Koganehiko and Shiroganehiko. His open friendliness with the commoners, despite his good social standing, became a defining point of his personality and earned him many friends, such as the gatekeeper Jidanbo. This kindness also extended to non-humans, as exhibited by Kaien when he found an injured piglet and took her in, fondly naming her "Bonnie-chan" and keeping her as an unorthodox pet despite the protests his family must have raised against it.
Eventually, when Kaien reached his teenager years (or the Soul Society's equivalent of,) he decided to become a
Shinigami. Here it was revealed that Kaien was something of a prodigy. He passed the entrance exam on the first try and graduated from the academy early, completing the six year curriculum in a mere two years. Something that had been practically unheard of until now and earned him the title of "genius" from his peers. Yet for all the praise he received for his feats, Kaien played it down, stating that he wasn't anything of the sort. To him, such an accomplishment just wasn't that remarkable and certainly wasn't worth all the fuss others were making of it. It was probably this humbleness that saved him from both the envy of his peers and gained the attention of Squad 13's captain, Ukitake Jushiro.
A few years after Kaien's graduation, Ukitake approached him with a proposal to become Squad 13's vice-captain. A proposal that Kaien, curiously enough, refused and would continue to refuse for the next several years. When Ukitake asked for his reasoning, Kaien explained that he felt there were more experienced and talented shinigami out there and that he wasn't the most capable man for the job. It wasn't that he didn't want to work for Ukitake but rather his sense of duty that prevented him from doing so.
However, as time progressed, Ukitake did eventually wear him down into accepting the offer. Whether it was because of his persistence or because Kaien felt he'd finally accumulated enough years as a shinigami, however, remains to be seen. After his promotion and subsequent integration into the squad, Kaien quickly found himself the subject of admiration by many of his subordinates. His open, good-natured and down-to-earth personality made him well liked and easily approachable despite his brusque and outspoken mannerisms.
And it was perhaps for these reasons that he gained the favorable attention of Squad 13th's 3rd seated officer, Miyako. Though the details of their meeting are glossed over (read: non-existent) Kaien and Miyako's relationship eventually moved past that of two co-workers into something much more intimate and it wasn't long before their attachment resulted in marriage. To Kaien, Miyako was everything he could ever want for a lifelong partner. Strong, intelligent, beautiful and kind, she became the most precious person in his world and he could never want for another. It was true love in it's simplest form.
For the next few decades, Kaien remained a strong and devoted vice-captain, often filling in for his sickly captain and doing more work than most in his station were. None of which changed when Kuchiki Rukia entered the squad. Rukia, who had recently been adopted into the Kuchiki clan, another one of the five noble houses, was being estranged by her peers for her new titles. Kaien, who had never given a damn about social standing, was the first to treat her like an ordinary person since her induction into nobility and it was because of this that they formed a close attachment to each other.
It is safe to say that out of the entire squad, save for his wife, Rukia was the person he trusted most. They trained together and he was there for her when she had problems, even if she didn't want to talk about them. She was also the person he explained his theory of "heart" to. Heart being, in laymen terms, the relationships and bonds he formed with others. He told her that while Ukitake believed one should fight only to protect their life or their pride, he believed they were the same thing and that one should never die alone or their heart would vanish. But if you died with a friend to watch over you, then your heart would be passed onto them.
Unsurprisingly, when he died in the series, it was Rukia to whom he passed his heart onto, but that goes past his canon point and is therefore irrelevant.

1st person sample:
[The audio comes on with some muffled noises. As if someone is persistently toying with the microphone in a feeble attempt to make it work. After a moment it stops and you can hear someone speak in low, mildly exasperated tones.]
Consistent blinking means recording... inconsistent means a malfunction... [There's the sound of a few pages being flipped.] ... "To turn your guide into a miniature sized mecha, see pages 342 - 359." ... what the heck is that? [There's another moment of silence before the speaker gives a small, annoyed curse.] Can't believe this thing is standard.
[The fiddling noises are back. It continues that way for a little bit before, surprisingly, the camera feature turns on. You get a brief glimpse of Kaien toying with the guide with an instruction booklet laid out in front of him before it cuts off entirely.]
3rd person sample:
No good.
Propping himself up on an elbow, Kaien gave an irritated sigh and ran a hand raggedly through his mussed hair. 'This just isn't working,' he thought blankly, shaking his head. Honestly, it didn't matter what he did, count sheep, imagine the paperwork that was waiting for him in the morning, close his eyes and pretend really, really hard that he was tired, he just... couldn't fall asleep. He could pretend it was the small room or hard mattress all he wanted, but deep down he knew the truth. There was just too much on his mind.
And could you blame him? In less than twenty-four hours his entire life had been uprooted. One minute he'd been in Seireitei, giving Kiyone and Sentaro another earful for being drunkards on the clock and the next... well, the rest of that story was obvious.
He just couldn't fathom how an entire world could end in an instant with absolutely no warning. Or why he and a handful of others had been the only ones to survive. Where was the justification? Why him and not someone else?
'Better quit while I'm ahead,' he interrupted himself, halting that train of thought almost immediately. The last thing he needed was to wallow in self-pity and doubt. Especially when there were more constructive ways to spend his time. Like that pile of paperwork that was sitting on his desk, silently mocking him with its height.
"... I'm turnin' into taicho," Kaien muttered before giving another soft, little sigh. Kicking back his sheets and all but throwing himself out of bed, the shinigami proceeded to yanking on his shirt before settling in for another sleepless night of paperwork.
