hello, can't seem to reach you on email, just wondering if you'd like a dvd of pics from MZ's, as I'm burning some this week...? well, might bring a disc along to the roost just in case you're there. :) and let me know if there are any that you'd rather didn't go online.
sometimes HDR has a sort of "hyperreality". the strange thing is that if i look at lots of pics on Flickr, I find the ones that I like tend to be almost monochromatic (although each picture may focus on mainly a different colour). perhaps we actually see in mainly contrast, and only notice colour when it's meaningful, so perhaps photos that highlight one colour are more like the way we think.
that sounds like a good idea... perhaps a brief shoot and we can improvise as we go! email me at this livejournal address or DM me on twitter and we can discuss further!
(p.s. i think you mean the roost, but don't worry, we should all be going down together so you should end up at the right place!)
Ah - looks a fine piece of HDR with a selective desat. Great composition though behind the shot. Did you use a polariser on the sky as well? I like very much.
no, i think the tone mapping made the clouds go really dark for some reason. i really like the way the vein in the marble was emphasised, and also the building in the reflection was the hotel I was staying in (a good few hundred metres away from the opera house!)
I've been using various exposure fusion techniques for a while but finally shelled out for Photomatix about a month back. I think you've found an ideal subject for it as my first attempt at the flight deck ended up a bit OTT. Have you tried the effect in "Image>Adjustments>Shadow/Highlight" in CS3? Not dissimilar.
yeah photomatix is still the best, and it now has a plugin version that makes it a lot easier to use eg from aperture.
i use the shadow/highlight type thingy in aperture during raw processing, and it's amazing how much "tone mapping" effect just with the headroom in one raw image. but you can also do "single image tone mapping" in photomatix for a stronger effect.
i do like the hdr merge feature in photoshop, as it's easier to do manual image alignment, but the effect seems to be harder to predict and very soft. eg this one.
