Holiday reading..

.. has anyone yet noted that David Mitchell's The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet  is almost certainly a parallel world counter-history novel? Not to mention having at root a common sf trope I first read in Norman Spinrad's Bug Jack Barron..

Anyway is stunningly good - review to follow..

Gosh - I tried to read it but just couldn't get through. I thought the first chapter was ace, and then hated all the characters. I'll be very interested to see what you thought of it.

After the first chapter I found it very slow and would prob have given up if not on hols. But about a third through (maybe later even) it bursts into life and storms off from there. I think I've found all Mitchell's novels hard work to get into but worth it.

Yeah - that was after I gave it up. I might try it again sometime (when I don't have enough to read, ha ha!)
