She shouldn't have been surprised for females up into the early 20th century and still in some third world countries women were chattel. They knew from birth they had no say in their choice of husband. There were exceptions of course.

I enjoyed your story but the actions of the brother make me wonder what kind of love he had for his sister,

The brother is actually one of the most compelling characters in the epic for me (and it has so many compelling characters). I'd like to think it was an angry-brother kind of love... Thank you for reading and taking the time to comment!

huh... interesting that she took the blindfold out of... spite? rather than love. not sure that's how i'd react.

Well there are many interpretations, but somehow I find it difficult to believe she loved a stranger she's never met or spoken to, or had such deep respect for a man who's family basically forced the alliance...
And I'm not sure how I'd react at all!
