As usual, I've been nibbled by a plot bunny and have started a new WIP. I have no idea where this is going, but that's never stopped me before!

*~*
It wasn’t until after a large, hot, incredibly awkward meal and a good night’s sleep that they gathered together to decide on teams to complete a final, thorough sweep through the Tower. Azkadellia, as the unfortunate owner of the structure, was tasked to find them weapons and handheld lights with which to explore.
She piled the supplies onto an empty table and everyone took what they needed. Though the previous night had been free from unexpected intruders, no one felt safe unless every corner and room of the Tower had been inspected by their group personally.
Azkadellia stayed with her father, the only one who was at all comfortable in her presence. DG and her mother formed a second group along with Tutor, who chose to trot along behind them in dog form. The tiny, rapid clicks of his claws echoed down the hall when their group made its way upstairs.
Raw, Cain and Glitch stuck together as the final group, oddly unwilling to separate. Glitch picked up the last two lights, handing one to Raw while Cain tucked the last gun into his empty holster. “Lower levels,” he said simply, waving the other two toward the winding staircase.
Cain insisted on checking every room first himself, letting Glitch or Raw shine a beam of light through the door while Cain glanced around, listening intently. In some rooms they found working lights, in others they relied on only the limited illumination they brought with them.
When Cain entered the largest room at the end of the hallway and flicked on the light switch, all three men blinked at the sudden, overwhelmingly bright lights that flooded the room.
Rubbing his eyes with the heel of his hand, Cain cleared his vision and frowned at the vast room. Several things caught his attention at once and just as he felt the pull of recognition tugging at his mind he heard Glitch gasp and stumble behind him.
“Oh,” Glitch leaned against the wall next to the door, eyes wide and face sickly pale.
Raw stood next to Glitch, a comforting hand on his arm. “Glitch wait outside?”
Glitch glanced at the Viewer, visibly shaken but with an unexpected air of determination. “No, I’m fine,” he offered what was clearly a lie. His eyes darted around the room, taking in the metal table and black leather straps, the huge round lights and innumerable shelves of tools, medical supplies and what could only be described as torture devices.
Cain respected Glitch’s choice to stay, determined to make this inspection as quick as possible. “I’ll take the main room, you guys start with the storage areas.” He gave Raw a long, meaningful look that the Viewer clearly understood; he was not to leave Glitch’s side.
Watching closely for a moment as Glitch pushed away from the wall and focused intently on searching cabinets and drawers, Cain began looking around for anything suspicious or dangerous.
“Hey, what’s this?” Glitch’s voice broke the uneasy silence and Cain turned to see him holding a small, square box in his hand. “Looks like some kind of control for something.”
“Careful, Glitch, we don’t know what anything here does,” Cain cautioned even as he took a step toward Glitch.
“Oh, Cain, I’m sure it’s harmless,” Glitch grinned and with an uncontrollable curiosity, he thumbed the switch on the side and gave the single dial in the center of the box a twist.
Glitch’s sudden screams shocked both Cain and Raw so badly they froze for half a second before diving forward. Raw was closer and he caught Glitch as the man collapsed, clutching at the back of his neck and convulsing. Lowering Glitch to the floor on his side and putting his head on Raw’s lap, the Viewer looked helplessly lost in the face of his friend’s turmoil.
Cain was there a breath later, grabbing for the small dropped box and savagely turning it off.
“By the gods...Glitch, it’s all right, it’s over, I turned it off,” Cain said in a rushed voice, kneeling next to the others and resting a hand on Glitch’s head carefully. Glitch whimpered and writhed weakly, violently trembling hands still at his neck. “Raw, what’s happening?”
Shaking his head, expression deeply troubled and nearly in tears, Raw stroked Glitch’s arm soothingly. “So much pain, Raw never felt before.”
Cain rubbed his own shaking hand over his mouth before leaning down to gently pull Glitch’s stiff fingers away from the back of his neck. Raw helped by taking one of Glitch’s hands in his own and massaging the palm gently.
Running his fingers carefully over the hot, flushed skin of Glitch’s neck, Cain frowned when he noticed for the first time a small but unnaturally hard bump under the surface. He looked up at Raw. “There’s something under his skin,” he said softly, fingers moving in their own soothing pattern. “We need to find Azkadellia.”
