Another of those short little drabbles that won't get out of my head. Vaguely inspired by a comment by
lionille that perhaps Glitch has a Science Closet, like I do.
Title: Prodigy
Pairing: Glitch/Cain
Rating: PG
Summary: Another Glitch memory.
Cain found him in a small, dark room full of dust and books, laying on an overstuffed couch. One hand tucked beneath his head right under the end of the zipper, the other hand idly tossing a small, metallic ball up and down. Catching it with a confidence that Cain had rarely seen displayed in his friend.
Wordlessly taking a seat on the floor next to the couch, Cain had no fear of being accidently hit by the falling toy. "Missed you at dinner."
The ball stopped, caught in a vice-grip. Cain twisted a bit, resting one hand heavily on Glitch's stomach, elbow digging into the cushion next to the prone man's hip. Glitch rolled the ball in his talented fingers, tracing the thin, curving cloisonne lines that flowed across the gold surface. "When I was fourteen, I invented this...this toy," he said quietly, the tone dreamy and lost in the history of the room.
Cain bit his lip to keep from asking what it did, knowing he would most likely find out soon enough.
"It was supposed to go with Az's spinning doll, a little floating trinket to compliment it. For the doll to balance on," Glitch continued. "She was around four at the time, I think, just starting to work with her magic. Annuals before DG was born."
"You lived here with them? At that age?"
Glitch glanced down, seemed surprised to find that he wasn't alone. "What? Oh, yes. I grew up here." He didn't seem inclined to explain further. "The first time I turned this on was right here in this room." The hand that held the ball lifted, a finger aiming toward the ceiling though it was too dark to make out what he was pointing at. "You can still see the dent in the tiles where it hit. Went a lot higher and a lot faster than I ever expected."
"Where'd you find it?"
"Right where I left it, I suppose," Glitch shrugged against the pillow supporting his head. "Among the other failed inventions, forgotten in my closet of shame."
Cain snorted, gave Glitch's stomach a few pats. "Well, if you've got a closet of mistakes, I'm not sure there's a room big enough in this place to house your successes."
Glitch's smile lit the room, the toy dropping to the floor when his hand insisted on covering Cain's at that moment.
