Tin Man drabble: Day on the Lake

Aug 15, 2008 19:15

Wyatt let the cool, brisk breeze brush past his face and through his short hair, eyes closed and wearing an expression close to bliss. His hat and coat were safely stowed below the deck in the tiny, cramped room designated for the day's supplies and discarded loose clothing. The sails overhead were pulled tight and the occasional sharp snap sounded from the thick, sturdy fabric when the wind changed directions.

Taking a deep, easy breath, Wyatt let his hands blindly skim over the smooth, polished rail that surrounded the yacht's forward section. He hadn't spent much time on the lakes in his life, so when Ahamo had suggested a day out with the family and close friends, he was secretly thrilled at the chance.

When the wind broke for a moment of sudden silence, he heard a clear, worrying sound behind him. Opening his eyes and turning, he saw Glitch leaning over the opposite rail.

Rolling with the motion of the moving vessel, Wyatt crossed the wooden boards with only a bit of difficulty until he reached the other side, resting a hand on Glitch's back, smoothing his hand over the silky vest. He grimaced as the body under his hand heaved and coughed. "Guess you learned one more thing about yourself."

Glitch groaned and kicked his shin. "Shut up and help me downstairs."

Wyatt did as he was told and if his hold on Glitch was just a little tighter than usual, Glitch didn't complain.

Pushing aside the pile of jackets that had been strewn across the small bed, Wyatt guided Glitch onto his side but didn't try to pry the firmly gripping fingers from his forearm. Instead, he just settled himself on the very edge of the hard mattress next to Glitch's curved body and used his other hand to comb through the damp hair and over the cold, wet teeth of the zipper. "Better?"

"The movement hasn't stopped, obviously, but yes. As long as I can't see the scenary bouncing around the boat, I can convince myself that we're just riding in a car or something," Glitch sniffed and leaned into the gentle hand on his head. "You don't have to stay," he said unconvincingly.

"I think I've seen enough for today," Wyatt told him, though knowing that he would have to come out here again on another day. "Relax, take a nap. I'll keep an ear out if anyone is looking for us."

Glitch sighed and closed his eyes, his grip on Wyatt's arm loosening but still slightly possessive, even as he fell asleep to the rocking motion of the yacht.
