As the afternoon sun slowly faded and the room took on an orange glow, Jeb found himself drifting, watching the shadows play across the room’s high ceiling. His arm was tucked between his head and his pillow, one bare foot pressed against the soft quilt while the other remained where it had been for hours.

The sting of the needle only lasted for a fraction of a second each time, only until Raw’s experienced touch soothed away the sharpness and left only the dull ache that anticipated the next mark on his skin.

Jeb didn’t need to watch the process; he knew exactly what the tattoo would look like. It was the same pictogram he had traced with his own fingers, permanently scored onto both of Raw’s feet.

There had been no hesitation when Raw had asked Jeb if he could do this. Raw had gracefully participated in the formal wedding ceremony that Jeb and his family had planned and now Jeb recognized that it was his turn for Raw’s symbolic bonding. He had simply nodded and lay down on the bed, propping his naked foot on Raw’s lap.

“Almost done,” Raw said softly, drawing Jeb’s attention away from his wandering thoughts.

“There’s no rush,” Jeb replied, his smile tender.

Raw’s hand on the bare ankle was gentle, thumb stroking over the protruding bone. “Hurt?”

“No, it’s fine,” Jeb assured him.

“Good,” Raw sounded pleased and that alone gave Jeb a warm feeling of wonder. Never in his life had he imagined what it would be like to be married, let alone to a Viewer who loved him so effortlessly, with such passion and protectiveness.

A handful of stings and soothing touches later and Jeb saw Raw lean down, felt the brush of beard and lips against his ankle as Raw gave him a kiss of blessing.

Jeb dropped his arm and sat up slowly, lightheaded after so long on his back. He studied the indelible mark on his foot, a perfect match for the pair Raw displayed himself. The skin was slightly swollen, red around the edges of the blue ink but still easily recognizable. He lightly ran one finger over the design, tracing the twin lines that looped around one another to form a kind of stylized, broken number eight, the open ends on top leading to small symbols used to identify the Old Road.

It was perfect, an unending path that always led home.

Sliding his hand around the back of Raw’s neck, Jeb pulled him close to kiss his forehead, then his lips.

Raw returned his kiss with equal parts enthusiasm and admiration. When he eventually pulled back with a final, teasing nip to press his forehead against Jeb’s, his eyes were bright and his lips curled in a delighted smile. “You are family now.”

“I can’t to see the look on my father’s face when he finds out,” Jeb grinned playfully, wrapping his arms around his husband and pulling him down onto the inviting bed.
