Here's the basic point:
You have a government agency like the FDA that labels what is considered a "drug" and then once it is classified as such, the drug is considered a controlled substance and has to be regulated by the FDA. The manufacturers of the drug pay the FDA's fees and as such, the FDA makes money off the drug as long as it is being sold. This causes the price of the drug to go up. There are viable alternatives to some of these drugs in places like Canada but the government labels these substances "unsafe" because they are not regulated by the FDA. But really, these drugs are cheaper and it would benefit a lot of people to purchase drugs from Canada. However, this would cause the US government to lose money so they make it illegal. Also (and admittedly this is something of a conspiracy theory), they make it very difficult for real cures to be created because if a disease is cured, the need for the drug is not perpetual, and neither is it profitable. The government loses money. That's pretty much the gist of it.
