Rodney McKay would be lying if he said he wasn't attracted to Sam Carter. She was hot and blond and really, she shouldn't look that good in BDUs. She was even almost as smart as he was. If he were honest with himself, there were times where he thought she might be smarter, but then something would happen that would debase that notion.
This was one of those times.
"What is that?"
Sam looked up from her laptop screen. She raised an eyebrow. "It's the report I'm sending back to the SGC about the latest --"
"Yes, yes. But that!" He pointed at the screen. "That...abomination!"
Sam stared at him blankly. "What's wrong with my emacs terminal?"
"What's wrong? Oh nothing's wrong with it. It's a perfectly fine operating system, if only it had a text editorThere was a long pause. Then, Sam put her palm over her eyes. "Oh god, you use vi. Why am I not surprised

Not any more thought than me, considering I came to exact same conclusion, although I was considering Red Hat in there too. (I don't think there's any way in hell he'd use Ubuntu. At least, not without complaining about it. Loudly.)
This is amazing. Because there is no way that two people like Sam and Rodney could agree on a text editor. It's just not possible. But they can definitly agree that you do not install Microsoft anything.
Now I have this horrible vision where they don't manage to get rid of everything (because MS is evil and lurkey like that) and Rodney has to interface one of the laptops to the ancient systems and it starts this whole disproportionately big lockdown procedure that they can't figure out until they realise it's the Alantean systems saying, oh no, you are not letting any of that software anywhere near my so much more vital software (because apparentely Atlantis has an attitude much like Rodney). And then they fix it and have a public, city wide mocking of the guilty scientist who installed it where even the marines who are good with computers can get in on the mocking. /end babbling
ahem. anyway. sorry. you're post is very good. carry on.

And I agree with you that Atlantis would have none of that Microsoft stuff. (I have a special love for sentient!Atlantis.)
