My thoughts....

This is just my opinion about the results of the American Idol competition 2003......

I am a fan that lives in Alabama. This isn’t to talk about how great Ruben is or how happy I am that he won. I am a fan of Clay Aiken. This isn’t to say that I think the wrong person won or how sad I am that Clay lost, but this is something to say my opinion about the whole “looks didn’t work, but the talent did.” Yes, I know that Clay and Ruben both are VERY talented and they both deserve to win. I know you must think I am thinking of a bias opinion about either one of them, but I am not. I just want to say this and let it be done....

I have watched every show this season since January and I have seen the talent of each and every one of the contestants. They are all very talented and they all have proven themselves and each week since the beginning. Sadly, not everyone can be the actual "American Idol". I have watched each contestant be voted off one by one. Some have I agreed with at the type they were voted off and others I didn’t, but I knew when I saw the top 12 together on stage during the first show that it would be Clay and Ruben. It was just something about them both that I could tell they would. Call it intusion or something like that.

Well, when it comes to the whole Clay and Ruben at the end, I do believe that is competition was based on looks, not talent. I know you must be wondering how I could say something like this, but let me prove me point. Clay and Ruben are not the “typical pop star” stereotype, but both had what it takes to be the "American Idol". In a way, I feel that more people voted for Ruben because of his weight (of 350 pounds). There are a lot of people who are overweight in America. (I am a part of it). More people could relate to Ruben in this issue. Clay is what you would consider “a tall skinny little white boy”. A lot of people are getting tired of skinny people in the industry, which makes Clay not to what some people want to see. These people want to see someone they can better relate to (aka Ruben).

When it comes to talents, Ruben and Clay are both very talented (I knew they would get a record deal, but that is beside the point of what I want to say). They both can sing two different genres of music. Ruben can sing most R&B, and Clay can sing “pop” music. They are both versatile in what they can sing, but when it comes down to their voices, Clay has a wider range of how high or low he can sing. (He demonstrated this on Tuesday.) Ruben has a range that is suitable for him. It is impressive. Clay has demonstrated over the course of eleven weeks that he can sing more than one type of music. He can sing anything from disco to songs of today. Ruben can sing these types of music too, but some are not as suitable for his voice type. To me, Ruben didn’t try to change it up a bit like Clay did. Simon even noticed that Ruben needed to change it up a bit if you can remember. I know that Clay hasn’t been the greatest on some of his performances either. They both aren’t expected to be 100% right on when it comes to each performance.

As I watched this past Tuesday night, I watched as a fan who was giving both guys a clean slate and a chance to prove to me why they deserved to be the “American Idol”. I watched to see which one could prove himself as a best singer with his talent and performance. It was a given that both would be nervous. (I mean, come on, wouldn’t you be if you in their position?) To me, Ruben wasn’t at his best. His performances made me think, so what? Why should I vote for him to be the one? I wasn’t too impressed with his performances with the exception of “Imagine“, but it wasn’t his best either. That song to me isn’t best suited for his vocal range. Clay wasn’t at his best either. You could tell that close to the end of “This is the Night” as his voice trembled when he hit those high notes. When it came to “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, Clay was very impressive. He blew me away with how solid he was at the end. Clay managed to impress me enough to make me think, I want him as the “American Idol.”

I have watched Clay over the past few months and I have seen him grow and mature vocally. He is an amazing singer and is a class act. There aren’t that many people out there who can look like he did when he auditioned and can sing like he can. What I have seen, Clay has been more consistent and has the better ability to sing, perform and be the “American Idol.” Ruben hasn’t really changed vocally and hasn’t shown me that he can be “American Idol” type. Both have talent, but as I see it, Ruben isn’t best all around to be the best of the competition. He hasn’t changed very much and wasn’t the best singer I have seen. (I am NOT saying Clay is the best singer ever!)

The way I see it, Ruben was chosen for more so his looks than talent because if it was down the way the last show was with talent, Clay would have won. As I end this, I feel that the whole concept of the “American Idol” (to me it is just a label, that is why I have been putting it in quotes this whole time.) isn’t about how a person looks, it is about talent and showmanship of a person. Just because Ruben was voted to be the “America Idol” doesn’t mean he actually is. All I can say now is good luck to both of them and where their careers take them. We will all see who the TRUE American Idol is when the singles and albums are released.
