They claimed no great love affair, no deep love to survive the ages. Nothing that was merited with the stories to tell the following generation, they didn’t even think to ask to be buried together. They were happy though, together, that mattered.
It wasn’t even well known within the order, though most guessed, if they had eyes, they might catch a backwards glance, and hand held too long, enough to show that there was something. Even as the couples around them married, had children, started to live their lives in the midst of the war, neither Fabian or Emmeline thought to do such. They were soldiers, fighters, not mothers and fathers, not yet.
It was one such night, when Em was to stay in, work on calculations, help Severus decode a few parchments of information he was able to obtain, and Fabian was to go out, run a quick patrol of a few key members with Gideon (whose own wife was holed up in her home, small child in arm) that he pulled her aside.
“Em… I just, felt” a blush was already creeping across her cheeks, she couldn’t help it, “I needed to ask you something, but, it can wait, okay?” A soft kiss and he tucked her hair behind her ear, “It’s a surprise, but I promise, you’ll like it.”
Moody returned with two boxes, two boxes that held all of the Prewit’s brother’s remains. Each was designated to a specific individual, their sister and Gideon’s wife. Molly got his watch, and what they could find of his robes, most of what he was, and Em stood strong as the other woman broke down, she watched as her world was being torn apart, taken apart, and out of the small boxes, never saying a word.
It wasn’t until later, when work was going back to how it was, rebounding in its own strange way after a death that Moody approached her. “They fought like heroes Em… they died like heroes.” He pressed a small, velvet box into her hands, “We figured this was meant to be yours, but we didn’t… not earlier.” Letting his hand rest on her shoulder for a moment, he gave it a reassuring squeeze before stepping away.
It was empty.
