[It is very easy in one's life on the Elegante to lose track of time. Ignoring the possible discrepancy in calendars between worlds, there was the unending drone of days that just dragged past like a drive in a desert with no horizon ( Read more... )

Too many dead to honor, I guess.

[Jak hadn't been interested in any of the religious ceremonies, mostly he just stepped over the dead and tried to get back to protecting the living.]

There are prayers in Spargus. Prayers, burned papers, things that are supposed to reach the Precursors. Wishes for the Other life.

[The tone is detached, but mostly in case you were curious, Jak.]

[It's not like Damas to think of things like this. Jak's pretty sure something must have happened. He just hasn't figured out what yet.]

At the idols?

At the idols, in the homes of the deceased, at the site of the grave. There are other traditions based upon social rankings and things of the like but it would taste a lie to suggest I remembered more than a handful of them.

Sounds complicated.

[Jak's never been one for religion.

There's an awkward pause before he asks the next question.]

Did you ...

[Did you do a ceremony for his mother?]

Hmm?

[Damas can't read your mind, Jak.]

[Well damn it, learn already.

Jak takes a breath, then replies.]

What did you do when Mom died?

Ah.

[He stares at that patch of black, empty sky for a moment before speaking.]

The monks prepare the body for burial. Our traditions are somewhat different than Haven's because of the desert.

[He'll spare you the details.]

We burned prayers and incense in the bedchamber, and I was not to sleep there for the first night. The spirits are supposed to be requested to leave by the text on the prayers, and the incense drives them away.

[Damas almost asked them to not burn anything, and let her soul remain, if there was such a thing.]

She was buried in the gravesite outside the city. We cannot make gravestones, as they are hidden in the sandstorms.

[Which means, of course, there's nothing left of her.]

We burned more prayers. She is supposed to be honored on the anniversary of her death by her blood relations. As I am not related by blood, it is not my place.

[So maybe there's no one left to honor her.

Buried by the sand and almost forgotten.

Even for someone like Jak who struggles with the concepts of empathy and compassion, that's a depressing idea.]

Had I the choice, and no traditions to follow, I would have given her better.

[... did Daxter just say something smart?

But it makes sense. Jak hadn't even thought of that.]

Huh.

I suppose I should give you more credit, Daxter.

[WHAT THE HELL YOU GOT HIM SMILING??]

Damn straight you should. Why the hell aren't you giving me enough credit already huh?

I gotta tell you something 'bout your kid, Sandman. Sure, he's good with a gun and he's got his sparkle powers, but you're lookin' at the brains of the outfit. Right here.

He's just gonna let Daxter run his mouth.]

[Damas snorts in amusement, but ignores the rest of Daxter's comment.]

In any case, Jak, if you wish to learn the ceremony, it is fairly simple. Meet me on the top deck in half an hour.
