Does Java still need the magic command line foo to tell it not to run with a ridiculously small heap? (It's been a while, but back in the day I always had to do that)

Let's get coffee later on this week - it's not a funny story, but I do have a story from recent experiences for you this time. :P

Do you need to do special kernel-foo to use more than 2 GB of memory in a single process under Linux? I think I heard that somewhere.

Not if you're running one that's been built for 64-bit machines. You lose some of what you gain though storing double-length pointers.
