Wow, you're famous! That picture makes you look ready to kick some arse.
random story: when I visited Toronto (grad school visit) I spent my time in the Global Village Backpacker's Hostel which is easily the most colorful hostel I've ever seen. They have a bar where you are required to buy beer by the pitcher, which helps you make friends real quick. Good times...
PS: does anyone else think that rule about not ending sentences with prepositions is totally dumb, arbitrary, awkward, and not in keeping with the spirit of present English usage? okay, I'm done.

You and your deltoids make me feel fat. Not phat.
Maybe I need to buff up my weight-lifting routine. But I only do machines now, not free-weights. I'm very concerned about proper form because I've had joint injuries, and with machines it's less of a problem.

You have no idea how wrong you are! I command you to go read what Stumptuous has to say about that, because Krista addresses exactly that point.
She explains much better than I can, but basically, machines restrict your range of motion, causing you to do excercises in a way that isn't the way your body really wants to move. Of course, you always have to be careful, but if you're really worried, my non-professional suggestion is to do dumbbell excercises. You can start light and you'll build stabilizer muscles.
Let me clarify: I'm sure that free weights are better for you and safe for joints IF the exercises are done correctly. That's a big if. I have workout buddies, but they also stick to the free weights so I don't have anyone to watch me and make sure I'm doing it right.
I did go read the article by Stumptuous, though, and I'm going to give it another go-round. There are a lot of suggestions on her website so maybe I can get enough advice that I'll be doing it correctly. I still need to browse the site more in order to select a few new exercises to spice up my routine. Any suggestions for a beginner? I remember that you loved that roll-the-barbell abs exercise.
