Holy crap, Sue! I'm scared just sitting here reading this. How did the dog react? You are going to start having to pack a bag for your walks, now, that includes a flashlight, a BIG stick and other self-defense things.

I wasn't actually scared, because it was obviously some wild animal and we don't have anything dangerous. It was definitely unnerving though! Especially after the farmers wifes tale of terrifying groans in the night! LOL

I've been searching the web for likely sounds and I think it might have been two badgers fighting. I've never heard badgers before but I know where there is a large sett about half a mile away. Apparently the old badger boar will occasionally bully a younger boar out of the sett and possibly this is what I heard. They can roam up to a mile away from the main sett. They can also give bloodcurdling screams which is presumably what the farmers wife had heard the night before.

I've decided that I like night walks without a torch. I've found that any light disturbs my night vision and makes the darkness so much more .... dark. A torch would be usefull on those occasions when my peace is disturbed by rural rackets though!

I might be getting addicted to the adrenaline rush of being scared half to death! LOL

Oh yes, the dog.
Stan just stood still with us while we were listening. When we decided to turn back to the farm he turned round and RAN!
The coward!
