You can kill the weeds with piles of folded up wet newspaper or old carpet pieces. You can fill your raised bed with free compost from the city, which friends have used in their garden very successfully. Most of the folks I know who garden in the city do raised beds because they can control the dirt content better (and don't have to worry so much about what chemicals might be lurking).

I >think< the egg carton stuff is designed to decompose when planted.

I don't have a raised bed this year, but I think next year for sure. This year it was mostly - claw out a patch of soil, dump Miracle Gro on top, bury plants.

It looks a nice little garden.

Another way of controlling the weeds or stop from forming around plants is by take black or dark green plastic trash bags put them around the plants. You poke a hole in the trash bag or put trash bag around the plants.

I may do this or get some mulch. I just like the sound of the word "mulch."

I love your garden! it's so West Philly DIY. I vote for next year you do it without roundup. And remember I can help you with your compost needs...

I just planted my own little garden too -- broccoli, spinach, and tomatoes. We'll see how it goes. I'm leaving for China Thursday, and I think the plants should have sprouted by the time I come back in early June.
