"Hello, this is Susan. I'm probably out exploring the island. Leave a message, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Bye!"

"Su? It's Peter. I received a letter today that from our friend. He wants me to go home."

Susan took a deep breath, and sat down. "Oh, lord. How soon?"

"Monday," Peter said, trying very hard to keep his voice level. "Monday afternoon, I suppose. It doesn't say anything more than I'm needed."

"Nothing else. Nothing about how long you'll be gone, or what you'll be doing, or--" Susan cut herself off, taking a deep breath. "I'm sure it's important." She was quiet a moment. "Are you all right?"

"I think it implied I'm coming back," Peter said, suppressing any other feelings. "I'm all right. We knew it was going to happen, right? Hopefully I should be back. That's all there is. Are you all right?"

"I'm fine, Peter. Worried about you." The last time you left, you didn't come back. But Aslan wouldn't do that to her twice. She had to believe it. "And we did. I should have remembered that abrupt notice was the rule, not the exception, with Narnia." Susan smiled, trying to put some happiness in her voice. "But you'll be back soon, I hope. And you can tell me how Lu and Edmund are."

"I'm almost surprised there was notice at all from what you've said. But I'm grateful for it. And if I'm needed I'd rather go back then stay here not knowing anything was wrong." He put some steel into his voice at the last sentence. "I'll come back with Lu and Edmund stories. And Narnian flowers for you if possible."

"I'd love that." Susan closed her eyes, hoping that it would happen like that. Lack of faith, that had always been what tripped her up.

Believe. Believe. Believe.

"Be careful? Promise me."

"I promise. I'll be as careful as I can," Peter said, his voice softening. "And you do the same. Always." He paused for a moment, not sure if he was going to be asking too much. "While I'm gone, make sure Willow is well? I don't think she's going to be very happy about this. Especially if I don't... And, not that you wouldn't, but keep helping Tyler? He could be a knight one day, I think. Or this century's equivalent."

"Of course." Susan swallowed, then hastily said, "I shall take her out for tea and cookies, and tell Tyler that you spoke of him. And if either asks, I shall tell them you are riding with centaurs and gryphons, and that you shall be quite safe." She paused, then asked, "When will you be telling Willow?"

"I'd appreciate that, Su. Thank you. I doubt Willow will believe you about the second part. But thank you. And I'm...I don't really know how to tell her. But this weekend, I suppose."

Susan nodded, then said, "Stop by the clinic before you leave on Monday? I-- might have presents, for Lu and Edmund. And Su." She smiled again, forcing calm. "But I shall save yours for your return."

Peter smiled. "I'll do so happily. I want to say farewell in person. And I'll give Narnia your greeting when I arrive. Thank you again."

"Then have a pleasant trip, and if Willow needs to talk, let her know I'll be here. All right?" Susan paused, then, very hastily said, "Lord, that's the door. Must dash. I'll see you on Monday, Peter. Love you."

She hung up the phone. And just managed not to burst into tears.
