Memorial Day - How Times Change

Just a few words on the topic of Memorial Day, for which my son serving in Europe would kick me. We just won't mention it to him will we?

So since he's not reading this I can admit that when I hear from him there are words that come over the phone that can chill me to the bone. I don't dwell on it, as it's not the norm and doesn't reflect his ( Read more... )

great stamp as usual Susan. I admire those who serve so unselfishly, who still think it is ok to be American. I hang my head at what the women did in the prisons in Iraq- why is it they thought they could do what ever the men did?? It was bad enough when the did it but even worse from a woman. As a woman Air Force Veteran- I would tell them I am ashamed of you. Your morals, your ethics, you deserve a dishonorable discharge--- don't hand me that I was just obeying orders stuff- I just don't believe it. Linda in IN-AF.Vet. 1972-76

I was wandering thru your site and found your journal. This is the second time today you've made me cry! I retired from the Army in 1994 and your words about your son and other veterans really touched my heart. It has reminded me that what I did was important and also brought back one of my strongest memories of being in the military. I was in Germany and was the sergeant of the guard the night the Berlin Wall came down. There wasn't a dry eye in the guard shack as we listened to the radio; and not one of us doubted that we were part of history that day. Although every misdeed of the military is front page fodder, people forget that everyday there are thousands and thousands of service people just "doing their jobs." Thanks for reminding me. Melody
