Thanks to everyone who gave advice regarding the cat & kitten situation - at present they are staying with the mother, and the person who had sort-of assumed responsiblity for them, seems to be being a little more responsible - they've promised to get the two parent cats (only about 8 months old themselves) neutered, and I think they may have found ( Read more... )

Mmm Wheeler's. I was in Canterbury at the weekend and the Shepherd Neame spring ale (I forget what it's actually called) that's everywhere down there at the moment is cracking :)

Btw, remember Wheelers is byob, there's an offy right over the road.

Heh I just went back and re-read your Whitstable entry to get my appetite going - the menu there looks so good, but I think my need to consume crustaceans will win out over all the 'finer' dishes! I'm presuming the Threshers across the road will be open by 12.30 or so, our table is for 1pm - and presuming also they have chilled decent wines? Tempted to bring a fine offering with us just in case (have the fear of being stuck with Blossom Hill as the only chilled option!) unless the offy is well geared-up for people visiting Wheelers and has a good chilled selection?

I think 'Early Bird' is the spring ale from Shep Neame - expecting to find a bit of that, but also the tiny Whitstable Brewery Company beers - they do an oyster stout and a fine raspberry wheat beer too.

That's the one! We got a decent bottle of Prosecco out of the fridge when we were there.

I'd definitely recommend the crustacians, the fish dishes looked amazing but you could probably get similar for the price in London.

Man I have massive food envy now :(

Still Whitby next weekend, which becomes steadily more of a gastronomic event as I get older!

Have found that the offy is open from 9am, so shall invite the birthday person to choose their wine in advance, and get them to stick it in the fridge for collection at 1pm :-)

I know what you mean about Whitby, we had a bit of a relevatory moment about 8 years ago there where we found ourselves having a picnic in the abbey, but instead of chips & 2 litres of cider, we were having smoked fishes bought fresh from the smokery, fine cheeses with grapes and apples, good bread and a nice dry Reisling out of proper glasses!
