i sometimes pause and take a gander at what is considered "trendy" or "popular" in the modern fine art world and it always results in me asking myself the fairly rhetorical question of "maybe i'm not esoteric enough in my work? maybe i should be more avant garde?" these artists, whose work bleeds over to the side of slightly manic, slightly insane ( Read more... )

I don't think you're alone in asking those questions and feeling that way about your work. do what you enjoy and keep doing it!

i totally agree. really i think i had just gotten done looking at some artist websites and kept thinking to myself "what the fuck am i looking at??" haha. i honestly don't understand sometimes why some people "make it" while there are those who clearly have talent and are flying under the radar. it just seems like pretentious crap sometimes.

i think every artist periodically takes time to reflect on their own work and the works that are around them. every artist gets new inspirations and thats why art progresses. i know of two painters who have recently gotten inspirations from their recent travels leading to new lines which are definitely broadening their repertoires
