Susp's Review: TARGET/ZELLERS EXCLUSIVE SPRINGER

Oct 05, 2008 23:01

Whether he's fearlessly leading his fellow Wreckers into battle, or making Arcee's spark pulse faster, or simply cracking another one-liner, Springer is one of the Autobots' finest.

Robot Mode: A recolour of Cybertron Evac, Springer is about 17 cm(6.7") tall and 22 cm(8.7") wide thanks to the copter kibble on his back. Main colours are bright green, grey, and silver with pale yellow and white accents. Springer's head is bright green with a pale yellow crest, white face, and translucent blue lightpiping. It's a good colour scheme, and the head does vaguely resemble G1 Springer's.

Springer boasts some great play value. His head and waist rotate and he has universal joints at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. Mounted on his right forearm is a working winch that extends to about 11.5 cm(4.5"). Pressing the yellow button retracts the string. Unfortunately, the hook is sculpted so that it's really not possible to hook another figure with it. On Springer's left forearm is his helicopter rotor, which slices silently and rapidly through enemy ranks when you press the yellow trigger repeatedly. You have to move the kibble on his back out of the way first though.

Inserting Springer's metallic silver and translucent red cyber planet key into his backpack deploys his spring-loaded plasma rocket launchers. The backpack can also be swung up so that Springer isn't firing straight up into the air. The rockets travel over a metre.

Transformation: Remove Springer's rotor and open up the blades. Detach his lower torso, rotate it 180 degrees, flip it up, fold up the feet, slide in the shins, and connect the legs to form the cockpit. Open the forearms and fold in the fists, rotate the rotor box 180 degrees, detach the shoulders, swing the arms forward and connect them. Slide down the head and backpack, swing the backpack up and connect it, and snap the tail halves together. Finally, re-attach the rotor.

Vehicle Mode: Springer's rescue helicopter mode is based on the Eurocopter Dauphin, which is a welcome change from the usual gunships. His colour schemes remains the same, with large, translucent blue windows and a red and white Autobot symbol on his roof.

His gimmicks are even more impressive in this mode, and the winch can be rotated down for slightly longer reach. Doing so, however, causes the box to get in the way of the righthand launcher when you deploy it. The small rotors in Springer's tail spin freely and he has flip out landing gear. He holds together nice and solidly.

Overall, Susp Sez: This is one of the best Voyager toys ever made, combining aesthetics, poseability, durability, and fun gimmicks. The fact that it's a homage to Springer is the cherry on the top. 9.5/10
