Summary: Unlike Chinen, Keito can't stand the bitterness of black coffee
Something hasn’t really changed after the five years they have spent together as a team. Maybe it is just Keito who notices the presence of a thick, unseen wall between him and Chinen. He concludes it that way as he glances secretly at the younger boy sitting accross the table, seeming completely comfortable with his cup of hot coffee while Keito feels like he is the only one who gets tortured by the awkward silence. At least, on his side, he thinks it surely is awkward.
There is something about Chinen that Keito can’t reach even just by a touch of his fingertip. No, it’s not like Chinen distances himself from the english boy or sets up a barrier from those he doesn’t want to get close to. From time to time, Keito has tried to start a conversation with him-a simple greeting and telling the situation each of them having-but that’s it. It’s never more than that. Sure, they look like a close friend when they are together with the other members as if the unseen wall is never there to begin with, but the wall will eventually come to set them apart again once they are left with just the two of them.
Keito looks at the cup of coffee in Chinen’s hand and then to the cup of hot chocolate he has been turning left and right for the last ten minutes. Chinen dislikes the taste sweet while Keito himself is unable to stand the bitterness of black coffee. This reminds him, aside from dancing and singing, they don’t share a single same interest.
I really wish it’s only a matter of different interest, Keito prays.
He wants to know more about Chinen. He wants to understand him more like how the other members do. The wall of awkwardness shouldn’t stay longer than it has. He promises to himself that he will break it soon.
Not too soon, maybe.
A little bit longer than soon, maybe.
Keito checks the time. It is already past fifteen minutes from the time of the appointment. He continues fidgeting in his seat. He starts wondering, what takes Yamada and Yuuto so long. For the time being, it is only them who can lift the silence between him and Chinen.
Or…
“Um…” Keito mumbles, trying to catch Chinen’s attention. Part of him is relieved to know that it works.
“What?”
“I…” He presses his lips. “The first time I tried black coffee, my tongue couldn’t bear the taste. It was long ago, though. I don’t know about now…”
“You want to try?”
“May I?”
Chinen casually smiles. “Sure.”
Keito takes the cup from Chinen and carefully sips the black liquid. The next thing he does is putting it down in a dramatical slow motion and Chinen almost fails at his attempt to stiffle his laugh, most probably because of Keito’s ever-so-hilarious scrunched face.
It’s okay, the bitterness worths it, Keito reassures himself. It seems like he will never understand why Chinen enjoys something tastes so horrible, but it doesn’t matter anyway. It is the first time he makes him laughing like that when it is just the two of them.
Let’s say it is one step to crumble down the imaginary wall
