Summary: Umika wants something more than just mails and phone calls.
For the nth time that day, Umika heaves a long sigh as she remembering the dream she had last night.
In the dream, Keito was standing a few steps away from her. He turned his head around when she called him, then he offered her his hand.
“Shall we go now?” he asked, warm smile on his lips.
“Yes,” she said softly, trying hard to hold down the joy she felt before it blast her heart. The joy was shown all over her face, though.
But, as she was about to grab his hand, he disappeared into the white along with the scenery around them and she was awaken.
It has been quite a long time since Umika and Keito last met each other. She misses him bad, so bad that the pang she feels on her left chest drains nearly all the energy she will need to go through today’s tight schedule. It even becomes hard for her to put on a smile.
She knows it sounds so egoist of her, but just mails and phone calls has become not enough. And the dream doesn’t make her feel any better. What she really needs now is to meet him, to hold his hand, to snake her arms around his neck, to rest her head on his chest, to hear his heart beating faster. How she misses his loving warmth.
She pulls the blanket around her body closer. Seeing that gesture, her manager asks, “Are you okay, Kawashima-san?”
“I’m fine,” Umika says, obviously lying. Her answer isn’t reflected on her face. But her manager just buys it.
“Do you want me to make you some hot drink?”
But hot drink can’t keep me warm just like how Keito-kun does, Umika thinks bitterly. She shakes her head. “No, thanks. It’s okay.”
The manager doesn’t like her answer. She’s worried, but it seems like there’s nothing she can do to make Umika’s mood better. “The event will start soon, so be prepared,” she says before leaves the girl.
Umika is now alone in the waiting room. The noise from the corridor outside is the only sound she hears, and it slowly disappears from her hearing as she drowns herself back in her sad thought.
The 9nine fan-signing and handshake event has started and Umika is relieved to see so many fans come and participate in it. Besides keeping her busy with signing 9nine’s newest albums brought by the participants, she fully realizes that the fans’ sincere feeling is something she has to respect. She can’t allow herself to treat the fans half-heartedly, so she tries hard to put her personal feeling aside and changes into her idol-self. Thankfully, all the signing, handshaking, and smiling quite successfully distract her from thinking of Keito and lift up some of the sadness inside her.
“Thank you so much for coming!” she says in cheerful tone as she shakes hands with the fan. After that one fan leaves, the next person in the queue steps forward. This time it is a man with a bit creepy appearance. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with wearing a mask and covering his head with the jacket’s hood as now is in the middle of freezing winter. But he also has a big pair of sunglasses on which makes his face completely hidden and it gets Umika intimidated.
Umika nervously prays that the man is not one of those kinds with weird intentions. Nevertheless, she gives him a bright greeting. “Good afternoon!”
The man pulls down his mask, then he puts off his sunglasses next.
And Umika instantly loses her breath.
With the face looks exactly like Keito’s, he smiles lovingly at her. “Good afternoon, Umika.”
“Keito-kun-!” Umika is about to raise from her seat when he immediately hushes her, pressing his index finger to his lips.
“Please, keep your voice down or you will catch the other’s attention,” he reminded.
Although still surprised, she nods in understanding. “W-why are you here? Don’t you have works to do today?” she asks in a low voice.
“Well, I do have one later, but I’m free right now. I think I better use this chance to meet you since we haven’t seen each other for weeks, so I planned a surprise visit,” he lets out a chuckle as he explains, setting down his 9nine album on the table. He looks straight to Umika’s eyes. “I really miss you, Umika.”
Umika can feel the sincerity of his words flowing into her heart. Her brown orbs meet his; she notices how Keito’s eyes go tense, which means that he is currently holding back himself from doing something, maybe stepping over the table to embrace her in his arms, expressing the rest of his feelings that can’t be described in words. How she wishes Keito would just do that without any care of what people would say. How she wishes no one knew who they were even just for a moment.
It is fine to make egoist wishes once in while, right?
“Stupid…,” she softly mumbles while she’s signing the booklet inside the album case.
Seeing pools of tears start forming in her eyes, Keito goes panic. “H-hey, you okay? Are you crying? I’m sorry if I have done something wrong to you.”
“What are you apologizing for? I’m crying because I’m happy.” She wipes the tears away with her finger. “Seeing you again like this even if just for a minute is more than what I’m asking for.”
“Umika…”
Umika helds out her hand. Keito looks at her questioningly.
“It’s a fan-signing and handshake event, Keito-kun.”
“Ah.”
It’s like the winter melt earlier when she finally can hold his hand again. His hand is big, but it sends warmth throughout her body. His rough fingertips-thanks to his guitar practice-repeatedly rub her palm.
She moves her hand a bit and stucks her little finger between his little finger and ring finger. Keito understands her sign, then he moves his hand and have their fingers entwined to each other.
“Ne, Keito-kun,” she starts.
“Hm?”
“Just to tell you, your disguise scared me.”
“Is that so?”
“I thought you were one of those creepers!”
He chuckles. “I apologize for that.”
“You should think for a better disguise if you want to do it again next time.”
“It’s better if I don’t need to disguise the next time I meet you.”
“… You’re right. It’s better that way.”
“Umika…”
“Hm?”
“It’s about time. I… have to go now.”
“Mm…”
As much as she doesn’t want this to end, she has to let him go. One by one, she releases her fingers from his until not even one of their fingertips touching. She places her hands down on the table, mentally restraining herself from grabbing onto Keito and preventing him to go.
“Take care,” Keito says before he puts on his mask and sunglasses once again.
“You too…” She bites her lower lip. “Thank you… so much. For coming.”
Then he leaves the line.
And the next person in queue steps forward.

Still, thanks to
boukenrider for the prompt! It’s something about UmiKeito have a fight and Keito stalks 9nine’s stage IN A HOODIE to make up for it, if I’m not wrong. Eeeh… /is checking her comment on previous post

The next fic may will be a HikaNoo, based on
