Summary: Keito received a late night call. He frowned at the sound coming from the other line.
At first, Keito was all smile at the caller ID showing on his cell phone screen. His expression changed once he picked up the call and his "hello" was cut off in the middle by the uncontrolable sobbing from the other line.
"Yuuki-chan? Yuuki-chan, what's wrong? Yuuki-chan?" He immediately sat up straight, his heart speeding up in worry.
"Keito..." Yuuki managed to say his name between her cry. She said it again. Again. And again.
He hushed softly. "I'm here, I'm here." He assured her in a way as if he was there by her side. He wished he were. His entire hands tingled to pull her into his embrace and caress her back-anything to ease her feeling.
“I… I’m sorry…”
“It’s alright. Calm down first, okay?”
“Mm.”
No words were present as he listened to her pouring her tears out. Few minutes later, the sobbing had subsided, just traces of it between the trembling breaths coming from her mouth.
“…Keito?”
“Hn?”
“S-sorry… calling you this late… just to listen to me crying…”
“Sssh. It’s okay.”
“No, it’s not. I’m… I’m really sorry. I must have disturbed your sleep-”
“-Yuuki-chan-”
“-this is so stupid of me. Why did I even call you and let you hear me wailing over a silly dream-”
“YUUKI-CHAN.”
Yuuki must be shocked by Keito’s exclamation. Now Keito felt bad for raising his voice at her even though it was very necessary. He had never done that before.
There was a short silence before she responded timidly. “Y-yes?”
Keito sighed. “I said it’s okay. I don’t mind you calling me late at night if there is something troubling you. ”
“Really? It’s three in the morning, you know.”
“I know. And it’s not like you will call me at this hour frequently, right?”
“Un…” She nodded weakly, or so he imagined. “Sorry.”
“You are apologizing too much.”
“Mou…”
He chuckled, knowing that she was pouting at his remark.
“Feeling better now?”
“Mm.” She told him to wait and he heard a distant sound of her blowing her nose. She sniffed. “Much better. Thanks a lot, Keito.”
“Don’t mention.” He smiled in relief. Letting himself loose from the anxiety, he was lying back on his bed. “By the way, you said something about silly dream.”
“Oh, that. Yeah. Oh my god, now I feel really stupid. That was embarrassing…”
“Nightmare?”
“Uh. Yes.”
“What was it about?”
“It was… Well, I-I don’t think you want to know about it.”
“Why not?”
“Because you might get scared?” she said each of the words slowly and not surely. “But, trust me. You don’t want to.”
“Why would I be scared? That was only a dream, Yuuki-chan.”
“You cry every time someone brings up scary topic!”
“What-no, I don’t!”
“You do! Or you will cover your ears and close your eyes and mutter something that sounds like spells.”
“I don’t do all those things! Stop making up story, will you…”
She giggled at how cute his muttering was when he asked her to stop.
“Just tell me, what was the dream about?”
“Why are you so interested in my dream?”
Keito absent-mindedly ran his fingers through his hair. “Well, your dream seemed pretty terrible, so I guess you want to share it with me and forget about it. You know, like sharing your problem with other, letting all your worries out.”
“I’m afraid that will make me remember it clearer instead…”
“Ah. Is that so…?”
“But it’s not like I can forget it if I keep it to myself either,” she added. “The dream was… it was so real. When I woke up, I almost got confused if it was a real happening or not. I was in total panic, I couldn’t think clearly… You still there, Keito?”
“Yeah. I’m listening. Go on.”
“Aren’t you sleepy?”
“Not really. Or more like, I don’t want to sleep. I still… want to hear… your voice.” He said it. He said it and he didn’t know why but his mouth just wouldn’t stop blurting it out. The slapping sound he made to his red face was loud enough for Yuuki to hear.
“Uh, okay… W-where was I?” Yuuki tried to recall, ignoring his cry of embarrassment. “Um, this is kind of embarrassing to tell you, actually.”
There was a short silence before she continued.
“We were riding a SUV car. We both sat on the back seat; I couldn’t see who was the one driving.
“I had a memory of us having fun before the ride and it made me feel very happy like I was on a high. And then, for a reason I didn’t know, you suddenly stood up and when I looked up at you, there were multiple sounds of gunshot.
“Right at that moment, everything went on slow motion. You wore a white shirt and…” She hissed as if the part she was going to tell was unbearable. “… blood was all over you. You fell on my lap, lifeless. I went hysteric… crying… I was shouting for help but there was no one around, even the driver was nowhere to be found. Worst part was I was unable to wake up and I had to see you in such state.
“It felt so real, Keito. It felt so real. Even when I finally woke up, I seriously thought you were really dead. It was really… scary…”
“…”
“Keito?”
“Hm? Oh, you’re done?”
“…Yeah,” she said weakly.
“That was one very scary dream you had. You didn’t tell me that I was there!”
“That would be just as embarrassing as telling you the dream! Now, you know you were. Be happy that I dreamt of you.”
“As the one who got shot. Not something to be happy about.”
“You shouldn’t forget that my position was as bad as yours, okay? You think I can stand watching you die before me? I thought I lost you-I thought you were dead for real until you picked up my call.” She ended with a hiccup. And then there was a sniff.
“Wait, wait. You are not crying again, are you?”
“Fellow crybaby doesn’t have the right to say anything!”
“Now, now, stop crying. That was only a dream, okay? That was not real at all. I’m still alive. See, we’ve been talking for minutes. And you will see me at school later. So don’t cry anymore, okay?”
“Un…”
“Good. Now that you have calmed down, you have to go back to sleep. The nightmare and crying must have drained your energy, right?”
“But I just cried. If I sleep now, my eyes will look puffy when I wake up,” she whined.
“You can cover them with your glasses.”
“And what if I dream of the continuation? I don’t want to.”
“Believe me, it won’t come back to you.”
“How do you know?”
“I have a strong feeling that it won’t.”
“Hmph. Then if you are wrong, you have to bring me to Disney Sea this weekend!”
“I get it, I get it.”
“Then, good night?”
He chuckled. “Good night.”
He waited for her to hung up, but the call was still connected after seconds passed. He was about to ask her if she was still there when she broke the silence first.
“Ne, Keito.”
“Hm?”
“I-I will say this just because saying ‘thank you’ only is not enough! I feel horrible for bothering you this late!”
“What are you trying to say?”
“…you…,” she managed a mumbling sound after creating another silence.
“Eh? I can’t hear you.”
“ILOVEYOU.”
The call was disconnected right away, leaving Keito stunned and amused.
Even though Yuuki said it very quickly, anyone could easily tell what it was.
For Yuuki to actually saying those words was a rare occasion. She and Keito had been friends for so long and it had been four months since they started dating. Despite the time they had spent together, they still found the words ‘I love you’ were hard to be said bluntly like how those lovers in sappy shoujo mangas did.
Nonetheless, he was happy. He didn’t mind her “bothering” him more often if that meant he could hear more of her ‘I love you’s.
He shook his head. “She doesn’t even give me the chance to reply,” he said as he typed a new mail and the words ‘I love you too’ appeared on the screen. He stared at those words, his heart beating faster even though it wasn’t like he directly say it to her.
He hit the OK button and smiled in satisfaction.
Message was sent.
Their love was mutual.
A/N: Wow. Eventually, I write something that contained ‘I love you’. Wow.
Uh. My head is too screwed up to think of a better ending. It’s like there is no relation between the beginning and the ending part. Or do I think that way because of my headache?
I blame Lana Del Rey’s National Anthem MV for Yuuki’s nightmare. The last part of the video was really sad. Simply said, it was a re-enacment of the tragedy of John F. Kennedy from his wife’s point of view. Haha now you know where Yuuki’s dream came from.
As usual, criticism and grammar correction are very welcomed :)
