although i might have been misguided to believe in or hope for the contrary, it's still sort of disappointing that my six months of free labour at the UN has not helped a single refugee. squat. i have learnt a lot, to be sure, but my actual contribution? pretty much zilch. my presence adds very little value. hence why i am getting reasonably tired

Yes write more. Much more. The journalism thing is difficult. I managed to write about the displacement of indigenous people in Peru (because of the gas industry) in the International Gas Union magazine and I try as hard as possible to squeak women's issues (or even women) into the Gulf Cooperation Council's yearbook. Whether it makes a difference on not I don't know but every little bit of effort is worth it. Perhaps you should write about the UN - being on the inside is a golden opportunity. Every four years we work for UNCTAD and I feel like I might actually be doing something meaningful in the paid hours of the day, small consolation but it means a lot.
