OOC Infomational Goods! Sweet!

I have decided to start banging out a bit of an OOC FAQ focused on Ramon's abilities here for your reading pleasure and information. Click the lj-cut to get going, spanky! Arm yourself with knowledge!

So what is it he sees again? Ghosts. Dead people. The soul remnants of the dearly departed.

Where does he see them? They tend to stick close to their bodies or where they died, but some roam as well. It all really boils down to what the person was like in life. Someone who was adventurous and outgoing will not mind traveling all over and straying from their remains or the place they bit the big one. A reserved, private person likes staying close to the remains and tend to not do much as a ghost; just stare and shuffle about. Someone a bit more passionate and emotional will tend to favor the site of their demise. But these are not absolute rules that are strictly adhered to, either by the mun, or the ghosts themselves.

What do they look like? These ain't your childhood-friendly dudes in bedsheets and styrofoam chains, son. Think more along the lines of Sixth Sense spectres. Gruesome and corpse-like, sometimes even to the point where the injuries or sicknesses that did them in are only more grotesque, even exaggerated. It's rare that he ever sees one in a condition that one can mistake for the living.

And he can hear them too? Hyup. Not so much as an auditory thing as it is a psychic one, though.

So he can communicate with the dead is what you're telling me here? Exactly. The living may not hear them; their voices may fall on deaf ears. But make no mistake. The dead are NOT silent. You ever play Metal Gear Solid 3? No? You suck.

What sort of contact can he make, then? Mostly talking, really. He can hear and see them, they can see and hear him. He can't touch them. Or at least he hasn't tried. Ramon prefers to run and scream like a girl when he spots the things. And most can't touch him either, or at least don't want or need to. But particularly angry ghosts, or ones that died violently, might be aggressive and try to attack. This can result in Ramon (or any other victim, for that matter) getting clawed, choked, slapped, bitten or, in the nastiest cases, possessed. Otherwise, any 'casual' touch from one of the dead will just leave you with a cold, crawly feeling.

Can he order or command them to, like, do his bidding? Would YOU listen to him if YOU were ghost? Heck no, he's a nancy boy, and you're a GODDAMN GHOST. They play fast and loose by their own rules, mang. MAAAAANG. Some are not above listening to requests and carrying them out if he asks nicely, though, but he hasn't quite reached that level of communication yet.

Is there a way for him to keep them away or avoid them? Block them out maybe? There are only one or two tricks he's learned in avoiding them. One of the main ones is that, as a kid, he figured out they can't pass through solid, physical barriers. If you get yourself into an enclosed space with no doors or windows open, you don't have to worry about any roaming or chasing ghosts getting to you. But if you leave a door even just slightly ajar, or have window cracked, that'll give them an opening.

The other thing is concentrating enough on something else can make them less of an imposing, psychic presence. Ramon's really bad at this, though. It's hard to meditate when you're scared as fsck. The tactic he tends to try and rely on is humming or singing, actually. He'll also just do this when he's nervous or scared either way; it's a habit. The song that's his default is 'Hotel California' by the Eagles. If you hear him humming it, mumbling lyrics and snatches of the tune, you know he's worried or feeling some ghosties nearby.

There can be other possible methods of keeping them at bay (such as, if your pup knows of an old gypsy charm that their gramma taught them), Ramon just hasn't heard of or learned them yet. These tricks noted here are not the limit of keeping them off his back.

Wait, 'feeling some ghosties nearby'? Is that what you said? Can he sense them, even when they're not in his immediate vicinity? Somewhat, yes. He gets that icy, prickly feeling on the back of his neck whenever there's some around. This isn't alway reliable, though, either because he imagines it, or because some dead folks just don't set off his spider senses. He doesn't know why this is. And either way, in a world where 94% of the human race is dead, that sort of blurs any accuracy that feeling could have had in the old days.

How long has he been able to do this, anyways? For as long as he can remember. Ramon doesn't know or remember how it started, though. He figures he was just born as an unlucky chump with a crappy, morbid superpower.

Can he sense or do anything else? Like know when living people are going to die or something? Nope. His extra senses only come into play when the person has already shuffled off this mortal coil.

So, like. Say that MY pup was in the room with Ramon while he's seeing and interacting with a ghost. What does MY character see? Ramon being a dork. All you'll see is things as they are in the physical realm; a body (if one is present), an unhappy medium, the setting, and thou. If the ghost is 'strong' enough, it might be able to pick up, move and throw items, but this is rare, and is obviously and usually one of those aggressive ones you'd want to avoid. Barrier weaknesses, like open doors and windows, do not actually visibly open and close like the ghost might do when entering; they only take that action in the spiritual realm and is not visible to those that see strictly in the physical.

Hey, I've got a cool idea for a thing we can do with Ramon and his powers! Or, you know, I just kinda wanna play with you and your character. Can I toss some ideas at you? Of course! Feel free to contact me either via email through the LJ addy, on AIM at 'delsomebody', or just leave a comment here or on any other post that's appropriate for OOC contact. Like, you know, don't go busting up another one-on-one scene I'm doing with someone else with your unrelated, OOC ideas. Not like I really had to SAY that, because you're all smart people here, but you know.

You TOTALLY did not answer the question I was wondering about. I hope you get stung to death by bees. Hey, whoa now! No need to get hostile! If there's anything else you want to know about, just ask! There's still a lot I'm fleshing out, and as of right now, I'm writing this FAQ at 5 AM. So I'm bound to have missed some obvious stuff. If I did, just comment and ask for clarification! I'll probably be adding stuff to this whole post when I think of/establish it anyways.
