Sutcliff's paintings

Dec 07, 2012 23:53

I know that Rosemary Sutcliff was a professional artist before she took up writing, and I think that background definitely reflects in her writing, all those fabulous descriptions.  But I've never come across any of her paintings, and all her books that I own are illustrated by other artists.

Has anyone ever seen any of her paintings?

No, never have. I do recall a photo on Anthony Lawton's blog of what he called one of her miniatures, but it was some sort of diorama, not a painting, and didn't look professionally made.

The only thing I've ever seen is this piece that showed up for auction earlier this year: http://www.arcadja.com/auctions/en/sutcliff_rosemary/artist/445202/

Ooh! Thanks. What a pity it's such a small image. Still, nice to see. I wonder what the story behind him is, looks like there should be one!

So very, very 1950s, that's awesome.
