Keito was not big on birthdays, sure he celebrated with everyone around him when it was their birthdays but when it came to his own, it was just like "ugh get me out of here". Sure he loved getting older, who didn’t? But when your birthday is the day of fools you start to have a different aspect on the subject of life. Today, he decided to act normal. he didn’t want any special treatment; he liked being in the back ground and allowing the others to make the spotlight brighter. Sure he loved attention, who didn’t? But not on his birthday. Honestly he just wanted a normal day.
He should have known though that this would be one day that he wouldn’t get it. He rolled out of bed once his father had pounded on his bedroom door for the sixth time that morning. He forced himself to the shower and twenty minutes later he pulled on the outfit that was mysteriously hung on his closet door. Checking himself out in mirror he decided it was good enough for a normal day and grabbed his bag to make his way downstairs.
On the table was one of his favourite breakfast foods; pancakes doused with syrup. His mouth watered as he sat down to take the first bite of breakfast with the day. His parents smiled at him and dug into their own breakfasts. Twenty minutes later he was jumping in the car to have his mother drive him to work. “Are you sure you don’t want a celebration?”
“I’m sure. I just want it to be normal today alright? Nothing special and no surprises. Please.”
“Alright, have a good day, practice hard,” his mother said as he closed the door to the car and walked into the building. When he got to the room they were supposed to practice in he noticed that Yamada and Yuto were already scheming whatever they were up to. They didn’t notice him, but the one who did, ran up to him and jumped on him.
“Happy Birthday!” Chinen said happily while attached to Keito’s neck. “Are you enjoying it so far?”
“Yes thank-you,” Keito said politely before detaching him from his neck and sitting down at the table near the window.
“Keito! Happy Birthday!” Hikaru said happily as he entered with Yabu and Inoo who were deep in conversation, but they stopped when they saw him.
“Thanks Hikaru-kun,” Keito said while turning a little red.
“Awww he’s blushing!” Takaki said as he burst through the door, “happy birthday!”
Keito looked around and then forced himself to think of anything but Hikaru. “Shut-up Takaki-kun, but thank-you.”
“So what are you doing for your birthday?” Yabu asked while sitting down at the table across from Keito. “Other than work I mean.”
“Work, sleep, homework, the usual,” Keito said casually. “I don’t want to do anything big today, I just want it to be normal.”
Yabu nodded and Hikaru sat down on the chair while letting out a massive farting sound causing the whole room burst out in laughter. “That was not me!” Hikaru declared and jumped up from the seat, there wasn’t anything there. “What the...” Hikaru started but another fart stopped him from speaking.
The whole room was in giggle fits, especially Yuto and Yamada in the corner. “You! you did thi..”Hikaru blamed them but was stopped by another farting sound. He walked across the room with farting sounds with each step.
“Who is so gassy?” Ryutaro asked while entering the room. “Oh it’s Hikaru, I should have known.” He just simply sat down and started on his homework. The others were looking at him waiting for an explanation. “You’ll see. Happy Birthday Keito-kun.”
“Thank-you Ryutaro,” Keito said simply and then the room went silent. Yuto and Yamada were now standing as Hikaru searched them for the fart machine that was apparently attached to him he didn’t even seem to connect that Ryutaro might now something. When he found nothing he just huffed and flopped on the couch taking it over, of course with another farting sound.
“Make it stop!” Hikaru whined.
“Why? It’s amusing,” Chinen said happily. “Someone obviously is trying to get you back for something, who did you prank last?”
“Um...” Hikaru thought for a moment, “I have no idea.”
“Wasn’t it Kisumai?” Inoo offered.
“No they wouldn’t be this cheap it would be something more dramatic like a flour shower,” Hikaru suggested as Takaki who had disappeared came back from the showers completely white with flour. “See.” Hikaru said and then laughed. Fujigaya and Kitayama burst in the room expecting to see a flour covered Hikaru but were shocked when it was Takaki covered instead and was ready to kill them. They shouted “April Fools!” and then burst from the room with Takaki hot on their tail.
“So much for a normal day,” Yamada mumbled and chased after them “Takaki stop!” was the last thing they heard before the door slammed shut and the running footsteps faded.
Hikaru was getting a cramp from laughing so hard, and the others were as well every time he moved.
After about five minutes of constant laughing Hikaru stopped, out of breath and almost exhausted from his laughter that he decided to seek out the culprit of his farting. “Ugh that would be beans Hikaru,” Yuto smiled and then laughed even more. Hikaru left the room and the farting sounds faded into the hallway.
“So who is it?” Inoo asked, curious as to what Ryutaro knew.
“I don’t know but Shintaro was planning something with the other juniors today, I don’t know if it was Hikaru or not but I wouldn’t put it past them. How juvenile it is could be them but then again it could be anyone, Hikaru does like to torment... I mean prank a lot of people.”
“That is true but I don’t think its Shintaro and his friends,” Yabu said softly.
“It’s you isn’t it?” Keito asked, “You did it didn’t you?”
“How’d you figure it out?”
“I just knew,” Keito answered “it made for a good morning though.”
“Just a present from me to you, now go seek out Hikaru and tell him it was me. He’ll reward you,” Yabu ordered and Keito gave him a weird look but got up and left the room as told. Keito searched all over and found Hikaru chilling in one of the empty rooms.
“Hello Keito-kun,” Hikaru said happily. “What’s up? How’s your birthday going?”
“Yabu-kun sent me to find you, he wanted me to tell you that uh...” Keito started.
“That it was him all along?” Hikaru tried.
“How did you know that?” Keito asked shocked that he figured it out.
“I knew as soon as I left the room and it stopped,” Hikaru elaborated “It had to be one of you, and I figured the only person in there who could get away with it would be him.”
“Why would he be the only one to get away with it?”
“Yabu has special privileges,” Hikaru explained.
“Oh I see,” Keito said sadly, clearly he took it the wrong way, “well you better join us so we can practice.”
Keito made to leave but he was pulled back from Hikaru and pinned against the wall. Keito forced himself not to blush but it wasn’t working. “I think we have some time.”
“Wha-what are you doing?” Keito stuttered, Hikaru was so close to his face. He was praying that it was not just another April fool’s joke. He had real feelings for Hikaru; a joke would devastate him.
“Keito-kun~” Hikaru started. “You’re blushing, why?”
“Nu-Nu-Nothing,” Keito lied.
“I don’t believe you,” Hikaru said and pressed his face a little closer.
“Please stop teasing me, if this is another April Fool’s Joke I don’t want it.” Keito pushed Hikaru away who surprisingly moved back a good couple of meters and made for the door.
Again he was stopped by Hikaru. Hikaru didn’t use force, this time he calmly grabbed Keito’s wrist and asked, “and what if I wasn’t joking with you?”
“Then I wouldn’t believe you, the day of fools your favourite day of the year because you are allowed to prank people without getting in trouble too much and you say you aren’t pranking me, that is highly unbelievable.”
“Keito, stop,” Hikaru said and then pulled Keito and kissed him on the mouth. He let go quickly and looked into the birthday boy’s eyes. “I wasn’t lying, and tomorrow, to prove it to you I’ll kiss you again and I will declare that I like you again and then you will believe me, until then believe what you will.”
Hikaru let go and made for the door.
Keito didn’t stop him.
“So much for a normal day,” Keito said out loud before leaving the room and walking back. By the time he got back Takaki was “defloured” and Yamada was casually sitting on his lap telling Yuto and Chinen the story of what had happened. Hikaru was over with the others helping Ryutaro with his homework and it was Yabu who noticed Keito first.
“Oh good we can practice now,” Yabu declared. “Let’s start you guys.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Today was good, I quite enjoyed it,” Keito told his mother as they were headed home. “Nobody did anything out of the ordinary except with Takaki-kun got floured. He got covered in flour, a prank that was meant for Hikaru and after a chase down things calmed down, and Yabu put a fart machine on Hikaru so every time he moved farting sounds were heard, it was amusing.”
“Sounds like a good day, now let’s go have a normal dinner and finish off our normal day,” his mother said calmly. Keito smiled in gratitude and his mother pulled into the driveway. They opened the door and were greeted by Hey! Say! JUMP, they shouted "surprise" and Keito was caught off guard.
This was not a normal day, no this was a surprise, a party, something he definitely didn’t want. But he’d let it go just for now. ‘I’ll maim them later’ Keito thought to himself as he joined his friends.
“You were so surprised Keito-kun,” Chinen said happily, “Did you enjoy your surprise?”
“Yeah, thank-you, you guys, just promise me one thing.”
“What is it?” they all asked together.
“Give me a normal day tomorrow and I’ll be happy.”
“You didn’t think that today was a normal day?” Inoo asked honestly, “I thought it was pretty normal.”
“Hikaru pranking people...” Yabu started.
“Whoever it was getting him back or at least attempting to...” Yuto added.
“Whoever actually gets pranked chasing after the pranker for revenge,” Takaki offered, clearly referring to today. “Seriously I’m still getting flour out of my hair.” To prove it he shook his head and flour came out of his hair.
“and then after we’re all exhausted from laughter, we actually get work done,” Ryutaro finished.
“Oh yeah, today was a normal day,” Yamada finished for them.
“I guess so.” Keito agreed, "Let’s eat.”
