You know, I'm as much for space as any good sci-fi geek. But when astronomers are saying, 'Uhm, we should really let this die. That money could be better used elsewhere'... I sorta have to give it to the experts. (And this pains me, because I hate W. His budget is quite out of whack.)
The planned repairs would have needed 1-2 billion... and considering NASA's typically overuns, that could turn to 3 billion. I'd rather see a new telescope for that price than repairing equipment from the 80's. Of course, that isn't what we get... we get moon walks. Whee. And. Stuff.
Because the moon is all exciting and, um, then it'll stop the conspiracy theories about us not really going there in the first place and, um, we can find those missing golf balls and uh yes, that's it.
