He remembered when the sun shined bright, blinding, and smile didn’t fade on lips, genuine and free. Unconsciously his hand reached for a silver necklace, the one of those around his neck. That little thing reminded a lot, really a lot and about things that don’t change. Like when something deep within his heart stirs when thoughts bring up one particular name, a melody in his mind, bittersweet and short.
He was sitting in a cafeteria, casually watching the people passing the window he sat next to. He believed that no one noticed nor even saw him, because the sun was blindingly shining right in the window. The cup of coffee was long time forgotten and probably cold. He didn’t want to check that. Instead he took one of the cookies that lied in a small plate besides it.
He noticed from the reflection in the clean window, that someone was coming his way, and he turned his head that way almost unwillingly. Outside small kids were playing with a dog and that had brought a smile on his pinkish lips.
“Mister, you have a letter,” a woman (the waitress that took his order from before) spoke softly as afraid to disturb him and his thoughts.
“A letter? To me?” he stared back wide-eyed, and then his eyes sight caught the pretty little envelope in the waitress hands. “You sure?” he asked again, despite of fact that he already saw bold, black words written on paper and those words were his name.
“Are you Park Jung Su?”
He nodded. Silly to ask, he thought, returning her smile.
“Then, mister, it’s for you.” she placed the envelope on the table besides the plate of cookies.
He picked it up and turned it around in his hands, wondering out loudly, “From who is it?”
He was surprised to hear an answer, since thought that the waitress already left. “A man in a black suit and sunglasses almost ten or more minutes ago handed it to me and told to give it to a man that sits right next to the window.”
“Thanks,” he thanked her with a little bow and watched how she walked away, disappearing somewhere at the back of the cafeteria, probably to take the next order.
He inhaled and exhaled, slowly opening the envelope, more like tearing the paper apart, because it wasn’t that easy job to do. Inside revealed a single piece of paper, a small one. He read it slowly, anticipation creeping at the back of his mind about who wrote it.
“Dear Jung Su,
I’m sure you’ll be surprised to hear about me after so long. I’m coming back to Seoul next week, and I would like to meet you at our meeting place in the park besides our old school, 10 AM.
Please, come. I want to see you and I miss you dearly. These months have gone by almost as years.
With love,
Ki Bum.”
He remembered as if it was just yesterday how they got separated and how much pain gave his parents. After all Kibum’s family is one of the richest families around the South Korea. No wonder why, since he comes from a small and poor family. What a coincidence. Doesn’t it sound like one of those fairytales? Oh no, no happy ever after or such. He was left teary eyed and alone to take care of himself. Since then he works in a book shop. Time by time he likes to read some cheap romance novels and to imagine that main characters are he and Kibum and there is a happy ending for them. Stupid, he knows but he is helpless about his own feelings because it doesn’t fade, not a tiny bit even after so long.
“How did he find me? And how-“he stopped himself because he was talking out loud, and that was catching some people attention. He stuffed every of his things and the letter in his bag, and paid for the lunch. He rushed out of the cafeteria, with his well-worn shoes hitting against the ground in a quick pace, and thought about going back to the book shop. Before reaching it, he noticed a black car following him all the time. “Oh that’s how he found out,” he mumbled to himself, opening the door the book shop with a strong push.
Next hour he watched the car from the corner of eye and was sure someone was watching him from the car. What a stupidity (to do so), but even then his hand reached to touch the necklace.
---
“Leeteuk, are you spacing out again?” Heechul, his friend, also one of workers in this book shop, asked, patting on his shoulder to wake him up (just in case if he is already asleep).
“Umm…no, just thinking, “He stretched his hands and looked up at his friend from his sitting position.
“Really?”
“Yes,” Jung Su confirmed.
“About what?”
He hesitated for seconds since wasn’t sure to tell him or not. But then he decided, “Kibum will be back next week.”
“What??”
---
“You should put on this shirt, and this scarf, and these jeans, and-“
“It’s fine. I said- it’s fine.” He cut off his friend optimistic try to arrange what he’ll be wearing when going to meet him. Actually he hasn’t decided yet- to meet him or not. His heart wanted so much to meet him but mind hold back that wish. He’ll be heartbroken again when he leaves. No one said someone has already approved their relationships.
As if reading his mind, Heechul said, “Don’t even think about it. You’re going.”
“But-“
“Think about it. What if you never have another chance to see him again? What then? I don’t want to see you crying because you didn’t go, better is because his kiss is still making you melt.”
---
“Put on a smile. Be brave. Be brave and don’t forget to smile.” He instructed himself and came out from the corner he was hiding in. Is he here, yet? No? Good. He sighed, walking until the swing, and sat down on it.
“I’ll swing you.”
“No, no… I’m afraid what if I fall off?”
“You won’t. I‘ll catch if you fall.”
“Always?”
“Always.”
“And also I will always stay by you side.”
“Really? That sounds promising.”
He smiled by that memory and wondered how actually it all changed because they were good friends at start. It shouldn’t have changed. He sighed. But even now, he doesn’t regret because what they shared was worth any pain.
“You haven’t changed,” the low whisper caught Leeteuk by surprise and he almost fell down from the swing. Soft arms encircled his waist, stopping him from falling. “…And still, I manage to surprise you.”
“You do,” Leeteuk muttered, inhaling the manly scent from Kibum’s clothes (what he hadn’t done for long), and looked up in the almost black eyes, belonging to his long not seen love.
Everything simply vanished from his mind the moment their eyes met in a contact that lasted longer than ever before. His heart skipped a beat and knees went weak. Wasn’t that how he used to react to those eyes and smile of thousand-watts?
Leeteuk thought of saying something, just something to make Kibum see that he isn’t tongue-tied by his appearance. There was a little clarification to make because had said, said that he might not return to Korea. “You said-“
“I know,” Kibum answered, caressing LeeTeuk’s cheek slightly with back of his hand, his eyes observing LeeTeuk’s beautiful features.
“But-“
“It was unexpected.”
“Then-“
“Let’s not think about anything else than us?”
“We can,” he merely smiled and took Kibum’s hand in his.
---
They had a drink in a restaurant, and a chat that lasted until their drinks went cold.
“I really missed you,” LeeTeuk’s words were barely above a whisper.
“I know,” with a smile he leaned in. He can and he wants to touch LeeTeuk’s lips when no one sees (so soft as silk), barely touching.
---
Leeteuk left worrying for later. He does so always just to enjoy the moment. He smiled and laughed, lightheartedly taking Kibum in with himself. They went there and here, Leeteuk getting energetic.
Kibum bought a key chain and gave to Leeteuk.
“For a little memory,” Kibum’s eyes followed LeeTeuk’s hand gesture (fingers wrapping around the key chain slowly) and he smiled.
Inwardly Leeteuk hurt a little. Soon this moment will become a memory.
---
They walked next to each other, sides barely touching, along the street.
Leeteuk smiled wide his dimpled smile, his hand reaching for the silver necklace.
“You seem so happy.”
Leeteuk gazed in Kibum’s slightly curious eyes, adding in his head a bit bitterly-I’ll cry afterwards.
---
They laid their bodies on grass, thick, cool beneath him, cheeks flushed, a wide smile plastered on their faces and sun shining in their faces.
Grass stick out everywhere, tickling LeeTeuk’s arms and scratching against his palms. They poke out between his spread fingers; the spread fingers of his left hand which barely brushed against Kibum’s hand next to him, and he entangled their fingers together.
“I want you to stay forever,” Leeteuk said, drawing circles in Kibum’s open hand.
Kibum didn’t answer, his relaxed face turning serious, lips pressed together in a tight line.
---
It was time for them to part. But they didn’t let go of each other, locking their lips together with despair, hands searching for support of their bodies.
“Will I see you again?” slightly breathless Leeteuk asked being pressed against the fabric of Kibum’s shirt.
“Tomorrow I’m taking a flight back. Early in the morning,” Kibum’s eyes wandered off, with his hand drawing soothing circles on LeeTeuk’s back.
Leeteuk swallowed, feeling a limp in his throat getting bigger. “I guess it’s the end.”
“I guess so.”
---
They didn’t see each other ever again.
