1. Many of you will have read about this by now. If not, a quick summary:

The wireless internet service in the NZ town Whakatane effectively censored its own name by installing a content filter that operates phonetically. The issue with the filter is that, in Maori, "wh" is pronounced almost as an "f".

Gah. Yes, I heard about this one. God only knows what they do with shitake mushrooms, pistol grips and cock-a-leekie soup. Though it's comforting to know that the people who wrote the filter at least know something about Māori...

A google search got me serencontrer.com, etreinte.com, and the charmingly-named cum.fr, which lauds itself for providing "rencontres de qualité sur internet".

Come on, surely there's something charming about a dating site that uses the Latin word for "together with" as its name. :)

Either that, or much depends on how they define "quality".

Oh, I'm sure! But I somehow doubt that the bunch of 17- to 21-year-olds in my class would have Latin on the mind. I'm also fairly dubious about the website's definition of "quality"...
