When it comes to unions, I take things on a case-by-case basis. This one is so cut-and-dried that it's ridiculous, so I'm totally behind the writers.

But what if the actor is also a member of the Writers' Guild? That applies to about half The Office cast, I think.

Steve Carrell is a member of both unions. In the video, Greg Daniels, the producer, mentions that Carell has won a Writer's Guild award. Besides SC, Angela Kinsey (Angela), Mindy Kaling (Kelly), Paul Liberstein (Toby), and BJ Novak (Ryan) are all writers/actors on the show. On IMDB I found at least one writing credit each for John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson and Ed Helms. So, it may be that only Phyllis, Stanley, Meredith, Oscar, Kevin and Creed can be on set.

ETA: Per Jenna Fischer's blog, The Office is officially shut down. They sent her boxes of her personal stuff from her trailer. Only two original eps are unaired.

Also, per http://unitedhollywood.blogspot.com/, Steve Carrell called in to NBC that he couldn't report to work due to "enlarged balls."
