help! please

I need to know how many words I can get away with writing for an assignment that asks for 400 to 500 words?  Can I get away with 600 words?  Or am I pushing my luck?  Context :  Uni assignment (region and culture) worth 20% of term mark.

Usually it is often 10% of the word count either way, so for a 1000word assignment 900-1100 is fine. Least for Sydney Uni. Can also depend on the marker and all that too, as they may be more accepting of more verbose assignments.

I tend to follow such instructions very literally. If they say 500 words, I give them 500 words at the very most.
