2. Has anyone seen anything about recent statements by the Vatican stating that the Catholic Church is the only way to salvation? Admittedly, I haven't read the document, but even according to a Catholic, there's some rather fiddly language. *sigh

To clarify the document, I've read both it and the original Vatican II document. What the Church teaches and has always taught is that it is the only source of the *fullness of truth* about Christ and salvation. However, this does not mean that salvation is not possible outside of the Church, in the sense that only baptized Catholics may go to Heaven. Indeed, the idea that "only baptized, faithful Catholics are saved" is a recognized heresy: Feeneyism. This document is most likely specifically referring to Feeney in its reiteration of the Church's teaching because Feeneyism is a herecy that has recently been on the rise among very conservative Catholics, who sometimes see themselves as more Catholic than the Pope
