This little ficlet was my entry for challenge 1.04 on doctor_rose_las. I was originally going to make it much longer, and include more smut, but it when I got to a certain point I’d realized I’d finished without needing to. Please let me know what you think.

Then I'll see your face
I know I'm finally yours
I find everything I thought I lost before
You call my name
I come to you in pieces
So you can make me whole

Letting Go
The Doctor’s back slides against the white cotton sheets, the yards of cool fabric a stark contrast from the woman in his arms, even through all of their clothes. Her skin is so warm it practically burns him, melting through layer after layer of the ice he’s so carefully placed around his stubborn hearts. It leaves him bare.

She giggles, trying in vain to remove his blue silk tie with just her teeth, so he rolls her beneath him, one knee on either side of her denim-clad thighs, and takes care of it himself, inelegantly tugging at the knot and tossing the offending garment aside. His shirt and vest are soon to follow, joining their fallen companion on the floor in a little forgotten pile.

Mischievous lights dance in her eyes as she caresses his now bare chest. Hot little hands slide gently up his skin, one soft palm coming to rest over either heart. He covers each of her hands with his, closing his eyes for a moment, overwhelmed. He’s kept her in a platonic bubble for so long that this should feel strange, but it doesn’t. It feels like coming home.

These are Rose’s hands, the same ones he’s clasped hundreds of times for one purpose or another. Sometimes it was it was to keep her with him as they fled immanent peril and sometimes he held her hand in his just for the sheer pleasure of her touch. It’s a pleasure now, one intensely amplified by the knowledge that he’s finally letting this happen, finally letting go.

He pulls one of those precious hands up to the back of his neck, rubbing her palm against the base of his skull. The other he lifts to his lips to place a reverent kiss against her fingertips. If not for a conveniently placed TARDIS and a rocket run on more faith than fuel, he’d have lost her today. All he was able to think about in the bowels of that impossible planet was getting back to her. And when it was all over, when she leapt into his welcoming arms, jubilant at their reunion, he suddenly realized how ridiculous he’d been. To deprive them both of something so wonderful, so vital, just because it couldn’t last forever, didn’t make sense anymore. How ironic that it took a nightmare to free him from his fear.

Taking control, Rose gently pushes him back, divesting herself of her pink t-shirt as she once more takes her place atop him. This is what joy feels like, he thinks as she leans down, the curtain of her hair shutting out everything but her touch. No, he amends, when her mouth finally claims his, this is love.
