So I have looked at goodreads, and I think it is a viable option.  I have started a private group on Goodreads called "Svava's Bookclub".  So far I am impressed with the features and the ease of setup.    One of my concerns about hosting on Goodreads is that is one more account for people to create and use.  On the other hand, Goodreads has a group

you could use booklings, which is a lj community currently not getting any action. it was another rocker's before it was mine :)

Thank you for the offer but I don't think that is quite what I am looking for. I am looking to create a private space for my friends to talk about specific books rather than take over an already populated list.
