WOW! I've never quite seen it in that light.

Where I work, we're given up to 3 days of unrecorded leave for medical family emergencies (typically leading to death) but these are limited to those with whom you are biologically related to only. In-laws don't count and beyond the 3 days, it's your personal leave.
