when it rains laughter
They were twelve boys given a chance. Baekhyun was mischievous and always making jokes, not quite childish but still somewhat stuck in the midst of childhood’s naïveté and innocence. Junmyun was always the one who tried to take control and organize everyone even when he was barely older than most. Jongin was shy and more of an awkward, gangly teenager in love with dancing and not entirely comfortable with the concept given to him. Sehun was slightly more aloof than the others, but at the same time talkative and energetic. Kyungsoo was quiet and never willing to talk much, preferring to hide in the corner and hum softly to himself. Chanyeol was always enthusiastic, his laughter ringing through the dorm cheerily, or at least that’s what he seemed to be. Yifan was silent and gave a rather frightening impression at times. Yixing was all over the place, obsessed with practicing but also hilarious, making up the funniest jokes at times. Luhan was soft spoken with a hidden streak of humor. Minseok was talkative and eager to learn everything. Jongdae was funny and bright, always asking questions and quickly grasping everything he was taught. Zitao was surprisingly bashful despite his appearance.
Each of them came with a dream, and they came to achieve their dreams. They came to live their love of music, of dancing and singing, and they came to realize that their dreams were not all what they thought they would be. Performing isn’t about you, they were told from the very beginning, it’s about the rest of the world. It’s about making everyone else happy.
And so they began to change. Baekhyun completely switched personalities when he was under bright lights and in front of the camera. Kyungsoo learned to overcome stage fright. Jongin realized that maybe dancing wasn’t all about the dance, it was also about appeasing the audience. Minseok nearly fainted from hunger when he went on a diet because someone told him that he wasn’t thin enough. Zitao cried for days when he was told he wasn’t good enough, that he couldn’t be appealing enough.
Somewhere along the way, their aspirations lost their personalities. They stopped doing things for themselves and instead for the what if hanging uncertainly on the horizon, the what if I do this, will the fans be satisfied, will I debut and become famous?
Yet it was also something they wondered about. When Yixing became sick for days because of overworking, when Kyungsoo spent hours coughing blood into the sink because he had sung his throat raw, when Jongin danced so much he collapsed in the middle of the day and had to be taken to the hospital, they wondered if they were doing all of it for fame and an audience.
And when other trainees bullied Zitao for his Korean, when Yifan couldn’t even pick up calls from his parents in fear that he would give up due to homesickness and quit, that was when the others gathered around and told each other that You don’t have to be homesick, because this is our home. We’re here for everyone. And they wondered if they were a family because they wanted to perform for others.
They were taught that Most groups have a limited time frame. You think that groups continue on forever, like Shinhwa and Super Junior and Dong Bang Shin Ki. It’s not true. So many groups debut every year, but only a few remain in the end. Can you be good enough to stay?
Junmyun had stepped forwards with a determined light in his eyes and said firmly, We’re capable. We’ll stay. We’ll stand out.
But they didn’t at first. They didn’t, and they couldn’t even debut in the first year because they couldn’t prove that they were different, that they could capture the hearts of people all over the world. And the instructor watched them with pity in his eyes and said You don’t stand out because this is what all groups strive to do. They put everything into trying to please others, and that’s what you have to do, but you’ve all lost too much of yourselves.
So they gradually learned to let go of that concept of doing everything for an audience, and slowly, they remembered their dreams from before, the dreams that had brought them together the first place. We are one was what the manager told them to say, and they took that to heart, because they were all there for each other, because they loved what they did.
They understood they were making sacrifices because they cared, because they loved what they wanted to do. Because they had dreams to fulfill. They reached for their goals, not for others, but for themselves because they wanted to.
And they began to stand out. Preparations for debut began. Songs were recorded. Teasers began to be filmed. In the midst of practicing and filming and Jongin coming back to the dorm late at night, completely exhausted by the overwhelming number of dances to practice and film for, the realization that maybe we’re actually going to debut began appearing in their thoughts.
Somehow, they found themselves ready with an album and music videos and dances and songs. Somehow they found themselves ready with showcases and performances and fans. Somehow they found themselves ready. And as they walked into the backstage, where coordinators and directors and technicians were waiting at the beginning of the showcase, Junmyun said in a choked voice, half sobbing and half laughing, We did it. We’re going to be idols. We’re going to make our parents proud. We’re going to do what we love.
They were twelve boys given a chance. They did the best they could with it, and it turned out to be enough.
