Summer project (well, one of them . . .)

Anyone know of a good series/publisher/author of books on teaching yourself a foreign language?  It is my summer project to start learning French, and I would like some recommendations of good textbooks.  I am, after all, a poor college student who finds it expensive and inconvenient to go take classes at some community college, and I am pretty ( Read more... )

For books, you can't beat the "Teach Yourself" series. They give you lots of good data to chew on and the explanations are concise and precise. If you could possibly swing the "Rosetta Stone" software, you're halfway home. It's brilliant. Berlitz is also good. Old school, but still effective.

Another really good thing is turn on the French language track on movies, with the English subtitles. Watch them several times each. There are also a couple of good French movies out: Jean de Florette and it's sequal, Manon de le Source. My all time favorite is the Return of Marting Guerre
