Lately I've been realizing that metaphor as a vehicle for description, while still important, is not quite so central to fiction as I used to think

metaphors are so much trickier than anyone thinks. when they're good and different, they almost make me love the writing automatically, content aside. when they're bad, well, they're just damned embarassing.
