From the Wired interview with Nolan

Nolan: People who have kids definitely read it differently than people who don’t. Which isn’t the same as saying there’s no answer. Sometimes I think people lose the importance of the way the thing is staged with the spinning top at the end. Because the most important emotional thing is that Cobb’s not looking ( Read more... )

this is exactly what i believe in as well. of course, the technical capability to communicate what the character perceives and aligning that to the reader/audience, that i wish i could do as brilliantly as he does. it is something to aspire for and maybe one day when i'm not this worried about my mortgage i "may" actually pull off something satisfying.

I’ve always believed that if you make a film with ambiguity, it needs to be based on a sincere interpretation. If it’s not, then it will contradict itself, or it will be somehow insubstantial and end up making the audience feel cheated. I think the only way to make ambiguity satisfying is to base it on a very solid point of view of what you think is going on, and then allow the ambiguity to come from the inability of the character to know, and the alignment of the audience with that character.

That's not fair!! *sobs* There's an answer!! And He's NOT TELLING US!! Granted that was an amazing ending, and I don't think I would have liked it as much if I had known the ending.

My mom just brought up that he could be waiting for a sequel. As much fun as that would be, it's wishful thinking...

more than anything, what i want is a prequel. i think that nolan needs to really spend some time after dark knight rises to really think about all the characters. we've fallen in love with all of them - we need to know where they came from, how they met, how dreamshare really started. we need to know the stories of stephen, marie and mallorie miles. how did dom get involved. how it became this classified military project into this tool for corporate espionage and the basis for a new criminal underworld. the video game may end up telling a parallel story about other characters in the Inception-verse, but I think the fandom would appreciate knowing the current characters more.
