peeve-off!

a marathon of nuisances, if you will!

i'll start.

-the phrase "stick to your ribs" (referring to food)
-baby tees (the word and the item)
-trains and buses that are exuberantly way off the timetable
-blanket denials of accountability/responsibility in the face of evidence to the contrary (does this one even count?)

your turn(s)

- The word "cool". I use it too, but why on Earth is it that this bit of ancient hipster jargon never dies?
- That I'm somehow supposed to believe that Ben Stiller is anything other than the ugliest human male since Frankenstein.
- Helen Hunt.
- The word "ditto", even when not used by dittoheads.
- People who insist that their categorically disgusting little dogs are "cute". Look, dogs are lots of things but they are never cute. Actually, dogs, full stop. Dogs suck.
- Exotic pets. The only acceptable companion animal for a human is the cat. And maybe the goldfish, for small boys and girls.
- The South.

So you can pretty much extrapolate my worst nightmare from this:

The scene: I'm at a dog show in Baton Rouge, seated between Ben Stiller and Helen Hunt. Helen, wearing a boa constrictor draped around her neck, leans across me to tell Ben Stiller how hot she and all her friends think he is. "Ditto", replies Ben. "Cool", I say...

I sort of enjoy trains and buses that are exuberantly off schedule, but that's because I enjoy anything that constitutes a big fuck you to timetables. Even the thought of it, dozens of people on a platform getting later and later, cursing, becoming all angsty, makes me warm and fuzzy inside. I like to think that every time it happens, at least one person finally realizes that it's not the end of the world if they're 15 minutes late.

On the other hand, I am infuriated by traffic. There is no exuberence there. It is a desolate wasteland, peopled only by the twin joys of pain and suffering.
Plus it kills the planet.

what about when it's 30 minutes late? an hour late?

even those 15 minutes, i can assure you, would be better spent doing any number of things that aren't waiting for public transportation - snuggling, reading, cooking, relaxing, cat playing, and so forth. maybe it's because i've been so short on time lately, but that lost time means something to me. and not because i care about being late - that doesn't make or break my day.

The thing is, the plebs won't be spending time that way - if they have an extra fifteen, thirty, forty five minutes, they'll just add another thing to thier schedule rather than taking time to just...be, I suppose. Sitting on that train platform, waiting for the train, they have to entertain themselves rather than seeking external stimulus, and that's the closest they'll come to thinking these days.

eh, in the blackberry age, they'll just re-check their email and read stock tips. plus, your assumption might be faulty - maybe they do like to snuggle or create elaborate dioramas of egyptian tombs or ride their bikes around the park. just because they're suits doesn't mean they don't do these things.

Newspaper headlines that use the word "tough" that aren't in the Food section. It always makes me want to say, "Oh, a tough-a-guy, enh?" in my best Chico Marx voice.
