Field Trip!

erm...probably because the cable modem is a shared pipeline between you and everyone else who uses the cable network in your area. kind of like how the connection at ups is actually quite fast, but it slows down like hell because so many people are sucking on the same fat pipe.

Thank you, Dr. Science! That comment was more to the effect that I remember dial-up being much slower.

well, it was, but in addition to modems that communicate more efficiently, and/or can handle more packet load with fewer collisions, a lot of dial-up clients and browsers now work together to download multiple items on a page at once, rather than trying to load each item singly, in order. also, there are finally fewer marquee and flashing headlines, and fewer moving GIFS, etc per page... ;-) (i miss those days...)

Ahhh, I remember back in the daze of my old 14.4.... When nobody knew what a "banner" was and everyone was just figuring out just how much they hated /blink.

There were no commercial internet sites. You could find Warez, pr0n, mp3s (if you were mIRC savvy), general nerd sites, and *gasp* educational sites.

Then came the great demise. Adware, spyware, popups, warez voting sites, payporn.... *shudder* it really has all gone to hell.
