Name: Dincht, Zell
Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
History link: BOOYA!
Age: 17
Canon point: End of game
Personality: Zell Dincht is a boy with a good heart and, unfortunately, a mouth that outpaces his brain. He is constantly energetic and puts that liveliness towards his training or running his mouth. All that excess energy makes him restless like a child and he can’t seem to stay in one place, spot, or position for very long. Many times when the SeeD members are waiting, Zell is usually seen shadow boxing or pacing back and forth. Zell is an excellent martial artist, but that talent is usually eclipsed by his amazing lack of a filter. More than once, his mouth and his actions, though unintentional, have gotten him in trouble by revealing inopportune information or simply not knowing when to shut up.

He is impulsive and headstrong, reacting to a situation before truly thinking it through. One clear example of this is during Zell’s first mission as a SeeD. When the President of Deling City is being held captive by Seifer, he accidentally lets slip their affiliation with Balamb Garden, putting the school in potential danger. Again, his overzealous and naïve actions make him the butt of many jokes and the comedic relief in Final Fantasy VIII. He is also rather thin-skinned and quick to anger which makes him an easy target for bullying. But despite the ruckus he makes when defending himself, he rarely holds grudges against anyone. When Seifer is rumored to have been executed, Zell is still sympathetic and compassionate to his former bully.

In lieu of his few obnoxious traits, Zell is actually rather intelligent. He is a well-rounded student and soldier. When moving from city to city by train, Zell is the one who holds the most information about the history and economy of their next destination. This would then suggest that Zell is very well-read and very studious when compared to the other main characters.

He is also one of the more stable characters in Final Fantasy VIII. Although Zell was an orphan like the rest of his friends, he was adopted into a loving home as a child and has learned to treasure family and friendship. He is very open and eager to make friends with anyone he meets, shown many times in the game by eagerly extending his hand for a shake to strangers. He is very loyal and dependable despite his seeming flakiness. At one point, he offers to help his newest friend Rinoa make a copy of Squall’s ring.
His foster family also plays a key role in the creation of his ideals and moral standards. When others are found breaking rules or going against ideals he believes in, Zell is quick to point it out. This is seen during the SeeD field test when both Squall and Seifer go against direct orders to the Dollet communication tower. In this way, Zell is a much more disciplined cadet than even Squall, who at times follows along with others’ misdeeds, and especially Seifer, who instigates a lot of the drama and is never able to pass the SeeD exam.

Strangely enough, despite this sense of duty and morality, Zell does tend to get in trouble with authority figures quite often in the story line, but most of his indiscretions are harmless. His T-Board is confiscated by Garden staff when he rides it on Garden property. He also gets in trouble at Galbadia Garden for running in the halls and is found doing push-ups with other miscreants for their misbehavior.
All in all, Zell is a rather normal, albeit spastic, boy who fights strongly for his beliefs, ideals, and friends.
By the end of the game, Zell is seventeen; however, as these saving the world quests suck up a lot of time, I am going to surmise that only a few months stand between him and his eighteenth birthday. Zell, along with the rest of the main characters in Final Fantasy VIII, have reached a maturity level that regular teens would not attain under normal situations. He is consciously allowed by his superiors to become part of an elite mercenary group, who often times must kill in order to reach their goals. I believe he already has the maturity of an adult; his body just needs to catch up with his personality.

Powers/Abilities: Besides his excellent skills in martial arts, Zell can draw magic from draw points and enemies. Since this is no longer the world of Final Fantasy VIII, there is no magic to draw, so this will pretty much be null and void. Zell can also summon mythical beasts called Guardian Forces at will to help destroy enemies, and this equippable Guardian Force is the secret to his exceptional strength and ability. The excessive use of these creatures, however, brings about memory loss in the summoner. There are quite a few Guardian Forces, so I will limit Zell to Quetzalcoatl and Ifrit.

In terms of Limit Breaks, Zell uses a combination of standard martial arts and kickboxing moves before ending his attack with a finisher. I will only include a few key techniques.

Finishing Moves: Burning Rave (Zell punches the ground and unleashes an attack of aura against the enemy) and Different Beat (Throwing the enemy into the air, Zell repeatedly kicks the enemy before drop kicking them back to the ground).

Prose sample:
“H’okay, SeeD Zell Dincht reporting from Wilburn Hill. It’s currently … 5:23 on uhhh March 8th!

“So, like… Been five days now since I was first assigned ta mission… uhhh buh buh buhhh-four nine eight three nine!-and still no conclusive sighting of the rogue monster-henceforth known as Party C-has been made. I talked with Miss… uh, a Miss Jaime Foster-henceforth known as Witness H-and a Mister Dunnbar-henceforth known as Witness C-about their accounts concerning Party C and any trends they may have gathered on Party C, which has been terrorizing a village outside of Deling City-henceforth known as Party B.

“There’s enough evidence ta support Party B’s allegations …” Zell was doing his best to wrap up his second log for the day as he tended to ramble on about nothing. At least, that is what Squall had told him countless times. And since he was the one who had to listen to them, it meant Commander got what he wanted. Not like it was his fault he sucked at relaying in a short, concise way; no one’s perfect, right? Truth be told, the SeeD was simply tired from tracking in the day, staying keen during the night for disturbance, and filing all these bloody logs. He was becoming borderline moody and all Zell wanted was to finish this job and go home. He was going through hot dogs withdrawals already! The fighter was pretty convinced Balamb sprinkled crack on all their buns or something. Nothing that damn tasty was legal. “… however, I haven’t been able to confirm its existence yet or n-”

A hard loping sound from across the grass was Zell’s only warning before a giant monster came up from the hillside in front of him. “Holy fucking Hyne…” His phone slipped from his hands and shorted out from the hard impact to the ground below. It was reminiscent of an adamantoise, and just as ugly as one too. But the blond had never seen one so big before, and not with so many spikes jutting from its shell and tail. He could probably ride on its shell it was so large! Which, actually, he might have considered if it wasn’t for the fact that it looked rather pissy. The monster’s large black eyes caught his blue and quickly lumbered back down the hill to flee. “What the-Oh hell no!” It took him five days to find the lunar bastard, he was not letting it get away that easily. “GET BACK HEEERE!!”

Zell stormed off after it, sprinting up over the hill with experienced ease. By the time he reached the top, however, it was already out of sight. “Shit…” That thing was fast! “Merrr…”
--

“SeeD Zell Dincht reporting…” The young man whispered into his newly cracked phone as he lay in the tall grass of Wilburn Hill, watching his prey with sharp eyes. It had taken another three days to find it again, and now he was not fucking around this time. He was going to get all guerilla-warfare on its ass if that was what it took to settle this. “I have Party C in sight. Wish me luck…”

Before Zell had time to ambush it, however, the large creature must have picked up his scent or he had just simply been too loud because it lifted its head and began to run the way it had come.

“Oh, no… Yer spiky ass isn’t getting away this time!” Taking a deep breath, the SeeD raised his left arm and summoned Quetzalcoatl. In the briefest of moments, the evening sky grew dark and thick with clouds. Zell looked to the air, feeling the first cold drops of water fall against his face while he watched for the mythical bird of thunder. Lightning slashed across the horizon and fell around the fighter, but he wasn’t worried, he was immune to this display. His Guardian Force’s attack caught the adamantoise and silenced it for good with a giant bolt of plasma that left the whole hillside shaking. Smoke actually rose from the charred remains of the monster, but, upon closer inspection by Zell, he noticed it was still breathing.

“…” Bending over its massive head, the blond called one last spell of thunder right to its brain and the beast ceased all motion. It may have been an enemy, but Zell believed that no creature deserved to die slowly.

But ya know what this means, right? Ya get ta go home!

The teenager’s tempered mood was buoyed easily enough at the prospect of finally sleeping in his own soft bed again. “Bababa-baaa-baaa-baaa-ba-babaaa!” Zell took out his phone again. “Ohh yeah! Mission accomplished! Returning home!”

Strengths/Weaknesses: Zell is obnoxiously high-spirited and energetic. He has incredible endurance from his combat training and inherent nature. Zell is also skilled in martial arts, as well as military subterfuge. He is also very book smart and enjoys learning about the socio-economic make-up of different countries.

Zell has a problem of talking more than necessary, which has turned him into the comic relief of his series, but also has endangered the lives of some of his comrades. He is also very high-strung and incredibly thin-skinned. He can become enraged easily or he can be hurt easily, and when he does something wrong he takes it very hard.

Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)

First Person Sample:
-s the red light mean it’s on, or-Why am I even askin’ you?
……
Okay, anyways… Hey! Is everyone listenin’?! You should be because I, Zell Dincht, have made an egg! No, wait! I mean! My sandshrew made an egg!
Boo-fuckin’-ya! I’m getting’ pretty good at this breedin’ thing!
…..
It’s pretty big, though…. ………….. How the hell am I gonna carry this puppy? Maybe I can put in my backp-Oh, but, would it break? I can’t jes carry it in my hands!
[the sounds of a manual being flipped through are heard.]
Oh, of course! They don’t tell me! Who in Hyne’s name wrote this?! Beginner’s guide my tight, white ass! Gah!

Third Person Sample: Maybe it wasn’t the season for fishing, Zell thought now that he took a moment to look around the large lake where he had set up camp. There were plenty of signs that encouraged it, but no one else was around except him and his sandshrew. And Hyne knew the blond didn’t know anything about the reproduction cycle of pokemon-pokefish?-so he hoped it was just an off day and that he wasn’t breaking any hunting laws with his pokeball-colored bobber in the water. It would have been nice, though, to meet some people who were in the same predicament as he. It was hard being a social butterfly when there was no one to flutter around.

“Well, I’ve got you, right?” The SeeD operative swayed from left to right, trying to get a glimpse of his pokemon which was currently curled up against his back like a really uncomfortable, scaly stone. Sandshrew didn’t move an inch or even wiggle an ear. “Right. Okay, well, thanks for the pep talk,” His words held a weariness to them. Who knew sitting on your butt for an hour was tiring work. He was not a good waiter; instant gratification was the way to go, and this whole finishing thing was not playing by those rules.

He was about ready to give it up and train with sandshrew when something big and heavy almost pulled his fishing pole right out of his hands. “Holy Hyne! Finally!” The pressure on the line was tremendous and, even with Zell’s strength , he was having difficult time reeling it in. “C’mon, baby…” He gave the fish some slack, waited until it grew exhausted and began reeling back in. But before he could bring it in to shallow waters, the massive beast darted off again, making Zell’s line sing with its speed. This cat and mouse came continued on until the blond had only last hurrah of energy. “Come to daddy-Oh yeah!” Pulling as hard as he could, the blond popped the line and bobber over his head and into the grass behind him while sandshrew meandered a few feet away from it. “Let’s check out this loot, bab- ………” Zell had expected something a little bigger and a lot more intelligent after that fight. The orange fish he had caught was just…. flapping around, mumbling something about magic. “Oh good…” Gee, what a great addition to his team, a retarded goldfish. “Do I jes lob a ball at it, or…. Something?” Zell looked down at sandshrew, but he got no definite answer except the blinking of two beady black eyes. Wasn’t the whole point of this place to capture pokemon? It wasn’t all that fun if they just land in your lap. “…. Go uhhh, go give it a smack….” At least then it would be some kind of battle.

Doing as it was told, sandshrew waddled over to the flailing magikarp, circling it like a confused vulture. Eventually its tiny clawed hand gave it a slap, but it didn’t appear to affect the fish in the slightest. “Well no wonder it was so damn heavy, most of it must be armor…” Taking out an empty pokeball, the SeeD member tossed it like a softball and waited for the struggle to occur. There was none. It had been caught the moment the ball hit. “Alright, well… two down, a crap ton more to go…”
